1976 CB550 - Center Stand - What does it rest on when up?
« on: April 11, 2011, 07:02:47 AM »
I am currently rehabbing a CB550 and noticed when I took it off the center stand the stand folded up like it should, but folded up high enough for the chain to rub on.  I know this can not be right.  Anyone out there know what should be stopping it from coming up the high?

Thank you.

I'm guessing you either have an after market 4-1 exhaust or the stock pipes are not currently installed.  The center stand rests on a rubber pad attached to the #2 muffler.

It does have an aftermarket exhaust and the rear pipes are off right now for clean up.  I will put ehm back on and see it that fixes the issue.  Thank you!

This happened to me too on my 550f! Although when I bought my bike It had a 4-1 and the chain didnt rub, then I replaced some parts (chain, sprockets, tires...) and when I put it all back together, the centerstand hits the chain. For the life of me I can't figure it out. I installed a rear foot rest on upside down to fix this problem for the moment, but I need to figure out whats wrong.

I will let you know once I reinstall the exhaust if it fixes it.  If not I will continue to work at it.

There is a bumper on the stock muffler where the center stand rests in the up position.

maybe not addressing the specific question, but this has come up a lot. On the CB750 anyway with an aftermarket 4-1, there is an "L" bracket that comes with the pipe to bolt on the frame somewhere usually the rear peg mount, which stops the stand before it hits the chain.

Something similar with the 500/550 no doubt.  These are often misplaced or mis-installed.

If its a 4-2 exhaust I'd expect the stand to hit one of the mufflers or to have a bracket of a different design.

For my 550 with a 4-1, I needed to fabricate a piece for the stand to hit when it snaps up.  At times, the stand would hit (and stop) at the 4-1 exhaust, but often would push past it to rub the chain.

There is a thread on here somewhere about it. I used the thread idea as a template, and modified it a bit.  One suggestion would be to make sure you follow the threads lead, and affix a rubber piece where the stand actually hits. Otherwise, the metal on metal rattle will drive you crazy.
