Where was this Photograph taken in Europe?
« on: April 11, 2011, 08:32:07 AM »
I just got this book and trying to trace the location of this photo. Book printed in Italy 1970. The CB750 shown has unusual details (no signals, different tailight, etc). Guessing its outside a big motorcycle exhibition show. Any Europeans know where this is?

By the letters it may be Italy, but could be elsewhere,
The right hand set of letters if it is W could be Werke.

At first glance looks like a museum, but could be a factory.like maybe a gear company..

I know I've seen that statue before on some TV show.  I'm thinking a German factory, but I can't find it anywhere on Google.

Given the letters 'ICLO' on the left, could it be at ECIMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori)? AKA the Milan Motorcycle Show?

In the 70's that was held at Fiera di Milano, or so the above Wikipedia page says. What did that venue look like in the 1970's?

The round taillight was typical for German market models.

The statue looks like fascist architecture, so Germany or Italy. In Germany a lot of fascist monuments have been removed after the war and it is rather unlikely to see one situated in front of an exhibition hall. So my guess is Italy.
But where exactly - I have no idea.

I have no idea where this picture was taken but I have read that book 1000 times! I found it when I was a kid and is one of the reasons i've got a 72 cb 750!  Its a great book.  I love the Munich Mammoth and the Vincent at the end.   And that Ducati 350 is about the most beautiful bike ive seen.

I'm digging that German market tail light. Any other pics of that set up? Know where to get one? Ebay Germany or something?

Is there a photo credit, either next to the pic or in the back of the book?  That might provide a lead.

I can't get the urls to open.

I tried a Yahoo search for "German market CB750" and came up empty. Tried to search ebay Germany and, apparently, don't know what I'm doing. LOL

For some reason the URLs didn't paste correctly.  Try these:

I was surfing around ebay and found a CJ(?)360t tail light bracket. It sorta-kinda looks like the one in the pic. Has anyone got any better pics of the German model?

The 'German' taillight on my 550F has the same shape as the 750 Fours over here (and the one on the 1970 photograph of the OP)

Actually I don't think you would like that taillight very much, if you'd see it in real. You can check it on http://www.d-roggenbuck.de/CB_500_CB_750.PDF which btw contains a double test of the 750K6 and the 500K2. Models for the German market had that taillight you would find on primitive tractors and other agricultural machinery in those days. With the upper halve (brakelight) in orange they were horrible. On the other hand the small blinkers that were also exclusively for the Gerries, were really neat compared to the later much bigger blinkers on USmodels that made beautifull bikes tasteless cheaplooking.

Come on, it's not that bad. Actually I love it and until now, the orange stop light kept the cages behind me in save distance.
But indeed, the tail light (red) could be brighter.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the orange....or the funky license plate holder....but the shape is really neat. I'd like to find something like that (with a red lens) to clean up the rear of my CB500. I already have some smaller turn signals that look like shrunken versions of the stock ones. I slimmer tail light would be cool, too.
Can anyone think of any models that may have something like that?
 (sorry for the thread hi-jack)

Well, didn't I tell you?!

Your Deutz is lovely and you know what? That tractor has been the first vehicle I ever drove in my life. When I was a kid, the friendly farmer close to where my grandparents lived, allowed me to take the wheel and (later) work the pedals.

I happen to live in Milano and have frequented EICMA since 1995

The building could be indeed one of the old pavillions in the former Milan fair grounds.

That particular ceiling looks familiar and so do the floor tiles. That brown shade is also quite typical of tiles used here and typography of the sign looks pretty italian too.

regretfully, the inner city fair grounds are now just a memory, so no way of confirming. The old fiera/EICMA buildings have been torn down to make room for a huge RE development  project.

the area of that shot could be the one where you see the cranes dismantling the building bellow.

I wondered why I couldn't find any photos of those fairgrounds in the 1970s. I looked for hours!

Yep and the lettering appears to be temporary as it's not in that photo. I guess that's why there's scaffolding in the bike photo. They were putting the EICMA sign up. Amazing.
