72 Honda cb350f tranny/sprocket question?
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:40:12 PM »
My son has a 72 350 four and I noticed today when I took her for a spin that it has some lag in the sprocket on the motor. I put the bike up on some blocks to clear the rear wheel and in gear you can rock the wheel back and forth between an 1/8 to 1/4 turn on the sprocket. Is this normal? Is something going wrong in the tranny or do I need to replace the sprocket?

IS THE PLAY BETWEEN THE SPROCKET AND THE SPLINE ON THE OUT SIDE? OR DOES THE OUTPUT SHAFT ROCK BACK AND FORTH GOING INTO THE CASE? OR BOTH.

IGUESS I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THE PLAY IS INSIDE THE GEAR BOX OR OUT SIDE. THERE IS USUALLY SOME PLAY IN THE GEARBOX SYSTEM. IF IT RIDES AND SHIFTS OKAY, I WOULD GO AHEAD AND RIDE, PAYING ATTENDSION TO A SMOOTH RIDE AND LISTEN FOR ODD CLANKING OR DESTRCTIVE NOISES.

Thanks, I have about decided the same. It is the entire shaft rocking back and forth but not as much as I thought. It doesn't make any odd sounds or grinding its just when rolling and you throttle and let off and throttle again you can feel or tell that there is some play at the sprocket.

Thanks,
Lynn

Is your chain loose?  If you are getting drivetrain slop, then it could easily come from a loosened chain.  They need to be adjusted every so often.

Chain is tight, there just seems to be more play at the sprocket than I think there needs to be.
