Genuine restoration question
« on: April 13, 2011, 10:13:51 AM »
I have a question to pose to the forum about genuine restorations. If one uses identical Honda parts off a different model bike is it still considered a genuine restoration in your opinion.

And is there any moral problems with selling a bike as original that has identical Honda parts from a different model bike.

Example, I am freshening up a 1977 cb400f. I used rims with nice chrome from a 76 model. They are identical in part number, but not originally from my 77. What do you think?

If the original Honda part number is the same for multiple models that included yours, yes it would be an original part suitable for restoration.  If that NOS tail light lens was sitting on a dealers shelf for the past 35 years it was never associated with a particular bike or model, just its part number.  If that fits several different models so be it.  It is still correct for any bike the part number came on originally.   Even used, it is the original part number that matters.  This is done in in Auto Concours restorations all the time.
