First off........love the site. Great info!

Ive got the chance to buy a 74 CB 750 for $400. Its in great shape....but the guy that owns it tried popping a wheelie and when he popped the clutch something in the tranny broke. I would love to get this bike and make a Cafe project out of it....but how easy is it to find tranny parts? I had a local cycle fix-it guy tell me to leave it alone......cant find parts. Another said to find a running motor and swap it out.    Do I need to look for another bike or try and get this one fixed?

Also....any ideas what might have broke...based on what he did?

It's nothing that I'd like to deal with, but if it was mine, I'd at least try.

just my two cents, but I'd let him (present owner) sit on it for a while, idea being that nobody wants a thirty one year old bike with a broken tranny. Then offer him a fraction of what he's asking if he hasn't gotten rid of it. If you can get it cheap, buy a service manual and fix it yourself. Used parts are all over ebay as well as cycle salvage yards, etc. And again, if you buy it cheap, what have you to lose if it's in decent shape otherwise? The trans problem will probably require some exploratory surgery. If you're mechanically inclined though, might just be worth it....

I think Im gonna get it. Based on what my buddy at work has said about it......this thing has either been rebuilt or stored. He was wanting it for himself....he also has a 74 CB 750.....but he knows how bad Im wanting a bike he said he would look for another.

I have a 64 Chevy short Fleet 1/2 ton Im selling and should get enough to get the bike, fix the tranny, and get the Cafe kit for it. I hate to sell it but its just parked and in need of finishing. I know I'll never have the money to fix it like I want.....plus with the gas milage it gets and how much gas is a gallon I couldnt afford to crank it much less drive it.

Anyway.....sorry for the book. I guess I just have bike on the brain. Cant wait to get it

$400 is a bit steep; I paid $500 for mine in good condition.

I don't know if the tranny broke or not but I got 3 of them. Sounds like the main drive chain coud lhave also broke. 2 of the trans. are stock and one has been back cut for an air shifter
