We need a 2 step installed on the bike. Gotta put the Dyna on there first. Ditch the other ignition- way better stuff out there now that s more tunable and reliable. Just need a battery box if you can find a place to put one with the total loss system. A Ballistic or Anti Gravity battery is very smalll, light weight and fit in just about any location and can be mounted in most any position.

While I fully understand the fact that the ARD magneto ignition system on the bike isn't the most convenient(user friendly) available today, I feel compelled to mention that this is not just any bike.  It's a custom framed vintage 70s lay down drag bike with a racing history.  Personally, I think of it as something of a functioning museum piece.  Bill has every right to do whatever he wants to do to his own bike.  After all, he paid for it! ;).  But look at just about every 70's vintage sohc dragbike, any successful one anyway, and ARD magnetos were on most, if not all of them.  I think that this should at least be taken into consideration.  That magneto screams vintage and authenticity to me on a bike like this.  It would sadden me somewhat to see some of it's vintage character removed.

I confess to be really into period correct parts on certain "important" bikes.  That said, I won't be straddling Bill's dragbike at the starting line and don't have to worry about the safety aspect while I throw my biased opinions out from half way across the country.

I just want to suggest that the authentic aspect to be kept in mind when...

That's as close as I get to a rant :).  I'm off my soapbox now(running and ducking)  :o

OK,George, funny thing is I feel the same.IF the ARD will co-operate,I have instructions now(Thanks,JimF),so IF it behaves it stays.....if not I'm not chasing my azz trying to fix, however, the gutted one of Jim's still served both purposes, but for now the ARD stays. How long? Time will tell, but oh I too love the look!! 8) So won't give up on it if it doesn't give up on us! ;) ;D Bill

Bill,

I'm glad that you feel that way as well.  I have another ARD magneto setup your welcome to borrow for testing purposes.  It's not on a bike right now, so no big deal.  Any chance that you will do any races in the northeast with the "Tiger" at some point?

Hey,

I do understand the period correct mindset- if its going to be a show bike or for exhibition passes, I agree the bike should be left alone as is. Yeap, magnetos had their place back in the day, not sure if i know of any dragbikes being built with one on now. I'm certain there's a valid reason for that change.

Since i'm familiar with modern day electronics, my thought pattern was to update the ignition to make the bike more practical and functional as well as rider friendly.

Either way, its a cool 70's dragbike and its an SOHC to top it off. Bill will have fun with it and we'll all get to read about his experiences. Wide the hell open throttle launches here we come.

Bill, be sure to let me know about the size of the outboard starter nut. I might be able to hook you up with something to crank it.

Bill,
Thanks for clearing up the bikes intended purposes for me. Since i met you guys, the thought pattern has always been on how quick/fast can we go and what improvements can be made to make things better.  I guess i got caught up in ways to make things better overall from a performance point of view. Now that i know its for shows, i'll just follow along and lend a hand if i'm asked.
