Krud Kutter to clean inside of tank?
« on: April 13, 2011, 01:12:03 pm »
I have read the posts regarding cleaning rust from the inside of the tank.  I didn't see any that discussed the option of using a basic rust disolver like Krud Kutter (phosphoroc acid).  Couldn't I just put two cans of cheap Krud Kutter in the tank, shake it around with either bolts or fish tank rocks in it for 30-60 minutes, rinse with water, rinse with fuel as needed, and fill tank with gas?  Is there a reason I shouldn't use a basic liquid rust solvent?  Thanks.

The Works toilet bowl cleaner is often suggested here, and has satisfied MANY forum members.  ;)

I would keep the fish tank rocks out of there for sure.Use screws, nuts, chains etc something metal so if you have to you can "FISH" it out with a extended magnet.

use phosphoric acid. The works will work but it leaves the surface succeptible to flash rust. phosphoric acid converts the rust to a stable state where flash rusting is more difficult.

I use EvapoRust and rinse with diesel. The diesel leaves an oily film so it doesn't flash rust before you start using it. No need to put nuts and bolts in the tank. I have done several gas tanks and they look like new inside when done. 8)

Trust me...don't use aquarium rocks. I did and it took forever to get them out. Had to use a modified vacuum attachment diy tune to get them all out.

Used sheet rock screws, have sharper tips......and count how many you put in, to get that same number out.

You can get phosphoric acid from ag supply houses in the form of milkstone remover.  Creates a thin layer of iron phosphate on the surface that is rust resistant.  No need for rocks, glass, or hardware.  Evaporust is nice, but pricey.  I've used both of those with very good results.  Works cuts rust but leaves no protective layer so I've never used it without getting a bunch of flash rust.  Electrolysis works well from what I've read, but I've never tried it.
