What's it like in Clayton?
« on: April 15, 2011, 06:43:50 AM »
My wife just applied for a job in Clayton. She said it's a suburb of Melbourne. I was just wondering what it's like there. Is anyone on here in that area? We won't know for a while if she got the job or not, but we're planning on moving to Oz whether she finds a job before hand or not. She's about to graduate with her PHD in organic chemistry. Anyone know of any post doc. jobs or anything else in that field? ;) We don't want to stay in the states to start a family because, well, I'm sure you can imagine. Anyway, hopefully my wife, my F3, and I will be moving out your way around October!

Hey Radam, I live just down the road from clayton, maybe 5-10 minutes away.

It's not a bad place in my opinion, its got public transport, shops and bits of everything.

Hope your move goes well! you might want to bring a few container loads of parts bikes lol

Thanks! I'll let everyone know where I'm headed when I find out for sure. I'm down to bring more parts/bikes if anyone wants to help pay for shipping.

Well, my wife got a fellowship(job) at the University of Melbourne! We should be moving out there around the end of next month. I don't think I'm going to be able to afford to bring a bike with me(right away). I'm trying to sell my F3, and I'm leaving my r75 with my dad because he drools every time he sees it. Anyway, we've been looking for a flat, but can't seem to find a good website for searching. I mean, we find plenty, but it seems like there should be some better sites to search. Does anyone know of a good website to search for flats? Thanks, and I hope to meet some of you in the near future.

Thanks for the sites guys! We're going to try to find something that is short term to get into right away, then look for a better place to stay once we get there. We may even look into some of the shared places. Hopefully we can all get together at a pub once I get there.

I have a few more questions. What kind of hunting can I get into near Melbourne? I'm a traditional bowhunter (longbow), and I'd like to bring my bow and arrows along. How hard will it be for me to have my dad ship that stuff over to me? Is there any law against bows in the city? My dad builds longbows, so I'd really hate to have one taken from me. The only bows I have were built by him. Anyway, if any of you hunt I'd love some more info. I'd also like to go hunt with anyone willing to let me go with them. Cheers.

Go further north and go Pig shooting, there's some massive boars in the northern states.... Don't know if i would hunt them with a bow though.... :o

There's a place about a 30 or 40 minute drive from Melb a friend and I used to go to shoot anything that moved.

Off the ballarat hwy I think.
I got to shoot just about everything when I was in the army, but I've never used a bow before.
Something that's sort of relevant haha, a guy who was in my platoon was the only guy that had used a bow before, he used to go hunting with one often he said. He was a freak at shooting and was almost forced to go do the sniper training. Can't remember his reason now, but he didn't want to.  some of his shot groupings were amazing, it was like he shot straight through the hole in the target from the previous shot!

Thanks again guys. I'm not really into killing animals just to kill them. I'd only want to hunt something I'd eat. I'll try to find a cheap place to rent with a yard so I can set up a target.

Are there any trees around the boar hunting areas? Where I live we hunt whitetail deer from tree stands. I'd feel safe that way unless the boars can climb. Are kangaroos good to eat? I know some people eat them, but is it good?
