Anyone know if this petcock will work for 1978 CB550???
« on: May 23, 2011, 07:54:11 AM »
Broke the nipple on my cb550 petcock last week and am finding that they are pretty tough to come by. I did come across this which has a 15mm thread, just like the 550.  Anyone ever tried this? for the price, it's really tempting

Also, since the nipple broke, I had to use the original 500 tank/petcock to get the bike back home. The tank had been coated but I guess there was still some kind of dust/residue in the tank. When I turned the fuel on, I saw a rush of debris going through the fuels lines. come to find out, I forgot to make sure there was a filter on the petcock.  Anyway, having trouble with #3 not firing consistantly now. Did I gunk up my freshly cleaned/rebuilt carbs? can I just take off the bowls and try to hit it with some cleaner or will they need a thorough cleaning?

Dang it!

It's actually a 73 500 with a 78 550 tank.

You would have to determine the size of the threaded boss coming out of the bottom of your tank.

But why that petcock? You can get the correct one from a number of sources for about $10 more than that. Get the right part, even if that one fits, who knows if it will flow enough fuel to support your engine.

The potential hassles don't seem worth the small savings.
