400f- electrical mystery
« on: April 16, 2011, 04:04:31 pm »
I'm in the home stretch of bringing back to life a bike that hasn't ran since 1985. :)
Currently have lack of power throughout the bike.
-No spark, no turn signals, no break or tail. Figured my headlights may not work cause my starter switch is broken(pushed all the way inside the housing)).

I have cleaned all of the connections on all 4white junction plugs. Cleaned the fuse box, put in new fuses. Pulled off back of fuse box and cleaned it. Cleaned the bolts on top of the starter solnoid. Have a new battery that reads 12.6. Overall I feel I have done a ton of cleaning.
-dead starter switch, its pushed all the way into the housing.
-starter turns over fine when I crossed the power on the solnoid.

When I first gave her power the oil and neutral light came on, now they don't.

Thoughts, guidance and beat downs are welcome.

My 400F had the same starter switch issue... stuck in and headlight wouldn't work.
My suggestion is to replace it before chasing electrical gremlins... you might be surprised how much difference this can make.
Here is a low res wiring diagram. If you want the high res version, PM me. This is the "real" diagram... don't trust any other!

Also, we love pictures here on the forum... please post some.

I can't seem to post pics from my phone, but ill make it happen. That looks just like the diagram that came with the owners manel.

I was thinking about cutting out the start switch and subing it with a momentary toggle. Just for the sake of progress towards getting it started.
