Ugly handle bar controls - HELP!
« on: April 14, 2011, 06:46:33 am »
I was wondering, what can I do to improve the looks of my handlebar controls? They are as ugly as they can be. Polish? Replace? Any other great ideas that won't set me back too much?

They polish up quite nicley actually.  I've seen honda choppers with stock controls that look awesome.  The only problem is getting the switches off without breaking them to do the job thouroughly.  I didnt like how obtrusive the are so I got rid of mine, however I'm only running the essentials...headlight/taillight, etc.

I just got some 550 controls last night.  I needed to clean the cobwebs out and check the extent of the rust, so disassembly  was my only choice.  I was surprised at how easy it actually was.  Of course I swept the floor first, and put a towel on the bench to catch the little parts.  Good thing ,cause all the parts are small, and I'm very good at dropping stuff.  I didn't take the starter button housing apart because WD-40 made it work well.  reassembly was tedious, but grease, never-seize, and plenty of time did the trick, I won't hesitate to clean another set.   next step will be the soda blaster to see if I can get an even finish/color for clearcoating.

I was going to paint but opted to try my hand at polishing. It's not hard, just time consuming.

I would say, Grab a beer, some compound and a dremel and get to it!

Polishing looks great! If you want the standard black, rattle can will work and some orange paint from a hobby shop will color the letters. Spray them black, use a fine brush for the orange and quickly wipe off any excess. The switch on the left in the picture is rattle can, the one on the right original paint. It looks ok for me. Not sure how to brighten up the red switch, maybe hobby shop paint too?

I used model paint to paint mine black. I have heard finger nail polish works as well. I read on here some place (maybe Tips and Tricks) what colors match the red.

Those turned out nice Magpie!

Wow, nice, I see there is hope! Polishing seems to be the route for me then for the aluminum parts and I also like the very professional looking rattle can job for the black pieces. Thanks for the tips, will go buy a 48-pack and start working!

Just a tip. Melt off the anodizaton with oven cleaner. It works fast so stay on top of it but you'll appreciate starting out with a better surface than sanding off the factory finish. That take forever and is a PIA!

Member Sohron has a pictorial how-to in the FAQ section. There are other posts on the subject but good luck searching for them with the new search function.
