Topic: Cam chain woes. Too long or too short. Can't get right fit

I bought a cam chain for my 550.  It's a 219 chain off a 500T that I planned on cutting down.  The problem is no matter how I tweak the tensioner, I can't get the chain matched up on the sprocket.  It's either too long and too loose or so tight I can't get it lined up.  Am I doing something wrong?

you must be doing the classic 500/550 assembly mistake of putting the fixed blade in FRONT of the chain.

it should go BETWEEN the chain runs.

Not very intuitive, but that's how it works.

I had it that way at first but I did catch it.  All the fighting has taken place with it in the correct position.
