F to K model ignition and indicator light swap
« on: April 16, 2011, 10:44:21 am »
Currently I am running the stock 76 F1 gauge and indicator light set up.. and frankly, I hate it.  It sits way too high for my liking, so I will be lowering the gauges.  I also want to swap the ignition from the F model to the K model style under the tank.  As far as I can tell the wiring should be pretty easy, aside from my F1 having an extra brown wire fore the parking lights.  Heres my issue though.. when I swap the indicator lights, how do I go from the two turn indicators on the F set up to the one indicator in the K set up?

I did this on my 77 750K last summer but I do not remember what I did(problem free if I don't remember I guess). I'm running a KOSO guage and the ignition switch under the tank. Get some wiring diagrams and go at it.

I guess my main concern is having just the one turn signal indicator rather than one dedicated to each turn signal.  If I wire both my turns into this one indicator light, will everything work properly?  I would just try it and find out, but i dont have the parts yet and I dont want to buy them if it wont work.  Has anyone done this before, and can anyone shed some light on this subject for me?

I plan on relocating my 77k ignition under the tank like the 76s and earlier. It looks like the "bar lock" feature makes the 77-78k ignition-key part a fair bit larger than the older versions. Do you guys plan on using the 77-78 ignition or switching the whole unit and therefor using a different key? Hope that makes sense? Love to see any relocation pics. Brackets used, wiring changes ect...

Additional question: will you relocate your choke as well?

Another question: is a 76 ignition switch a straight swap, connection wise?

I don't have the steerring lock function any longer and I am using a replacement Emgo switch from an earlier model( I had to eliminate 1 wire from what I remember/compare the 2 different wiring diagrams). I had to strip the harness covering some to be able to relocate the ignition switch plug under the tank. The indicator bulb will work fine with both sides connected to it and my choke is still mounted in the stock location (had to make a custom bracket to look a little better with my KOSO guage.

you would need a diode in each wire that went to the indicator light.  that way the current wont flow into the other side's blinkers.  radio shack or another electronics supply shop.  the diodes are about 1.50 each i think.
