1973 cb500 clutch lifter ball bearing
« on: April 19, 2011, 11:19:32 AM »
Hoping someone can give me an answer on this. I have a 73 cb500 k2 that I'm putting back together. Somehow, while assembling the left crankcase cover, I lost the little ball bearing that goes between the adjuster and lifter rod. From what I've found, it's Honda part number 96211-10000. Most descriptions list it as a #10 5/16 bearing. Is this just a 5/16 steel ball bearing? Is there something special about it that it is only replaceable with that exact part? It's a cheap part online but if it's something i might be able to pick up locally(quickly), I would rather go that route. THanks in advance!!!
Dang it!

Nothing special about it, just a plain ss ball bearing available at any decent hardware store,
or in a pinch you can salvage one from the crank of an old bicycle.

I have the exact same bike, and mine seems to be fused into the adjuster.  Does this need to be completely free moving, or will it be ok if the lifter rod can still seat on it?  My adjuster had a thorough cleaning to include degreasing, dipping, and soda blasting.  I picked at the gunk around the bearing and it feels and shines like metal.

Wayne Cochran... always there for me buddy!  I Happen to have a slew of old bike berrings so this is great news! Another question: There is a grease point on the outside of the crankcase cover.  What kind of grease should i use and roughly how many shots would you apply?  The bike has been sitting for quite some time and it definitely feels a little "not so fresh" down there. Thanks!

That zerk greases the adjuster collar, so it only takes one good squirt, maybe two
or three to displace any old grease. I use ordinary axle grease.

Lavis500 - the ball bearing should come out, try a heat gun if it is an issue.
