a full set of hm300 pipes for $120.00, Almost!
« on: April 20, 2011, 04:32:47 AM »
I found or so I thought a complete set of hm300 pipes for my k1.  I drove 3 hours to buy them yesterday.  When I got there the first pipe the guy hands me says hm341 my heart sank.  Fortunately the other three were in fact hm 300, so I bought the three hm300's for $80.00.  But now I need to find the missing pipe.  I believe its the right lower, if anyones got one I am interested.  Also how bad would the bike run with three 300's and one 341, would that one cylinder run rich?  Finall they do not have baffles, how do 300's sound without baffles or should I spend $100 and buy some?

If those three 300's are in good shape, you got one heck of a deal and well worth the additional investment in new, orig. baffles I think.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

You left the 341 behind..!!!!!!
I dont know if that is the height of cheapness, or just a plain bad, money-losing decision..................................................

nope, I got all four pipes for 80.00 .  WOW, now I know what all the hype is about the 300's I put them on my k1 today and its a totally different bike.  It feels allot better at higher rpm's and sound amazing!!!! But i did notice the 341 pipe seems to be back firing a bit when you let off the throttle.  And yes I am very cheap, but not stupid!  ;)  How much different do the sound with baffles?

Guitarkev..
I have a similar scenario - I have 3 x HM300 mufflers - all in OK condition. I did have these on the bike last year together with one HM341. I did have some behaviour issues. I pulled them off and swapped in 4 x HM341's. I got less noise but a smoother beat. I miss the noise a lot! So I just put back on TWO of the HM300's - 1 & 4 - leaving the two inners with HM341's. I ripped the end diffusers/baffles out of the HM300's - they were all rusted and stuffed anyhow and I took some spare end caps from HM341's and filed/ground them down by about 1.5mm and tapped them into the Hm300 pipes! I get nicer audio - not as good as 4 pipes of course. It does seem to run sweeter.
I have 120 mains jets on those pots (1&4) and 105 mains on pots 2&3. I get no popping, backfiring or any irregular behaviour to date. It was my guess that with the HM300's having less restrictive interiors - the 120 mains would suit - while the 105 might tone down the fuel output for the HM341 set. Popping etc - I thought indicative of excess fuel - being ignited in the pipe. All this IMHO of course.
Regards
Mark

I don't know if you decided to get the baffles or not, but as a K1 owner who rode his bike without baffles for several years before finally putting some in, I can say the exhaust still sounds great.  The HM300 baffles don't really do that much baffling.  All they really do is take out the high pitch crack from the top of the exhaust note, which in my opinion is the most annoying and unwanted part of the sound.  The low, throaty rumble is still very present.

I have baffles in my HM300s and love the throaty sound...much better than my other 750 that has HM341s ;)

Enjoy them!

Those 300s have the great GP racing sound to them! They usually require the needles be raised a notch if you had HM341 pipes before, or else raise the mainjets a 5 size. Most of the 300-piped K1 bikes had 115 mains with the needles in the center notch until the spark advancers dropped a few degrees, then they got 110 mains with the clip moved down to slot #4 on the needles.

Overall, the tradeoff is about 2 HP at 4000 RPM: the engines loses 2 HP at this speed, but makes 2 extra HP at 8000 RPM in the tradeoff. The 341 pipes came out when the U.S. speed limit dropped to 55 MPH and the from countersprockets went to 18T instead of 17T, and the pipes helped boost the torque right where most riders ran. It also make them a little quieter at 70+ MPH behind fairings, which is what made me buy the K2 in the first place, trading in my K1.

Thanks for the comments!  I am not running baffles but I plan on getting some come springtime.  I am also running 120 main jets and I'm not sure where the needle position is I never checked when I had the carbs apart.  Will it run better with 115's?because I have a set of those too....

FWIW, I bought two new sets of HM300s for two of my K1s. One set came from the outfit in Oregon that sells on ebay for 1100 and the other came from DS for a bit more. They sound significantly different. The Oregon pipes are much quieter. Both are stamped HM300 and have the correct baffles. Makes you wonder what the difference is. Even my neighbors comment on how different the bikes sound as I roar out of the sub-division. DS pipes are now priced out of control. Don't know where I'll get more. There doesn't seem to be any 80 buck deals here in Calif. Lucky you. Pictures would be nice. We like pictures.

I just got a set of 300's for $300 ;)  The deals are out there.  I found 'em on CL, and waited the guy out for two weeks.  He originally wanted $500  :o

A set of 4-2 slip ons, possibly Jardines.
