Bought 69 Sandcast today, vin and mfg. question
« on: April 20, 2011, 10:55:09 AM »
OK, I bought a CB750 today, vin # CB7501012215, mfg. 11/1969 and title says 1970.  Am I correct to assume this is a "sandcast" model that was built in late 69 and then imported and registered in the US in early 1970?  That would make it a late sandcast right?  It is running and riding and mostly original.  Title has 5000 original miles, odometer shows 22K.  I am debating whether to add more original bits and ride it awhile or send it off to eBay.  Any help appreciated.

To the best my knowledge, sandcasts were made up to engine number 7414. After that they are die cast engines.

So there is such a thing as a 1969 that is NOT Sandcast?  Oops, this may be costly...........

Yes, there were less than 7,500 sandcast made total. Many of those engines were ruined by the chains breaking and taking the cases with it. The replacement engines were diecast and no serial number stamped. There were 53,400 CB750 K0s made by the end of July 1970. My book does not tell how many of those were titled 1969's or 1970's, but what is known is that all but the first 7,400 + were diecast.

The sandcast were not preferred until way later when the collectors wanting the rarest let the secret slip....

My source is the hardback book "Honda CB750" by Mike Duckworth from 2003.

Yes, I have a 12/69, engine number 16xxx, that is a die cast. The CB750 came to North America in May/June 1969 and sandcast were gone by August/September I think. I believe the one I bought in early August of 1969 was a sandcast. It died a violent death shortly thereafter.  :(
Dare we asked what you paid for this bike? A good, complete die cast K0 is still worth a lot.

I should add that you can look at an engine and tell right away if it's a diecast or sandcast. The sandcast will have a rough, bumpy texture to it and you won't see the straight, flat marks left on the fins and case surfaces left by the die where the molten aluminum is poured. It is instead poured into a mold of sand..

10073 to 1012643 are "Holy Grail" bikes, check if your serial runs in this range, they can be worth as much as $1800.00 if running and in great overall shape.

This serial range represents the first batch of bikes that are not of any real value, so this in itself makes them quite collectable!

Hannibal, I haven't heard of those being THE bikes before. I know about the sand cast but why the 7415 to 12643 being so valuable?
thanks,
Cliff.

It seems really unlikely. What's strangest tho, is that someone with his experience would buy the rarest of these bikes without knowing for certain what it is.

There is another thread about a different bike on ebay.  It is a low number die cast.  It could be interesting to see if this guy gets his asking price.

It's interesting that the sandcast motors were not really cast in sand, at least that is what I have read.
