My first bike... ever!
« on: April 20, 2011, 05:03:53 PM »
Hey there all. My name is Jerrod, most call me J-RoD. Somehow last year I stumbled across a photo of a cafe racer and fell in love with everything about it. I later found this site and have been hooked. The only problem was that I never have ever owned or rode a motorcycle. Ive waited paitently, lurking through craigslist, getting screwed a few times, but not any more. I just found my 76 750 k6 for $800. The guy who had it, rattlecanned it flat black and brush painted the spokes red, but before too long thats all gonna be gone...

Any who, I just wanted to say hey...

Hi Jerrod.  You've found what looks like a good starting point for a build.  I'm not too sure about those red spokes though...  :o

Welcome to the Forum Jerrod!  Nice buy, excepting the red spokes of course!  ;)

nomad & mj, trust me, those red spoked haunt me in my dreams.

I just so happened to be really good friends with a painter/powdercoater who has never charged me for anything. Also I am a CNC programmer, so I'm pretty sure I can get this thing turned around soon.

Hi Jrod:

Nice bike, I painted my spokes just not red...

I did a bunch of work on bottle mold CNC machines in Zanesville OH,  Ever program a Monarch?  Pretty sure I slept several nights in Hebron or somewhere close to there.

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Zanesville!? I grew up in Bellefontaine! The "madmtn" portion of my username is a reference to Mad River Mountain (and my grandfather's nickname). My dad still runs a little machine shop up in Huntsville, although he should have retired years ago.

Oh, and not to hijack your thread, welcome aboard J-roD! My CB750K8 was my first bike also. Bought it with my tax return twenty-five years ago and I'm still riding it. I highly recommend a motorcycle safety course for a new rider, I am considering looking into an intermediate course for myself. I have learned many lessons the hard way, but had lady luck on my side since I have avoided any serious injury. Some of the mistakes I've made could have easily done me in. "Proficient Motorcycling" is also an awesome read and comes closest to a motorcycling bible than anything else. Ride safe and again, welcome aboard!

+1 on the motorcycle safety course. Google "motorcycle safety foundation" and their site will guide you to a MFS course in your area.  I took mine through Mott Community College and it only cost me $25.  The State of Michigan waives the motorcycle proficiency test if you have a MFS certificate.

+1 on "Proficient Motorcycling" a very good read.  I bought and read it just before taking the MFS course and I felt I was a head of the game.  I understood everything they taught right of the first time.

Welcome bmxjrod!

I don't know what is wrong with the red spokes?? (grin)

Hopefully that will be the biggest problem you will face getting your new machine into fine shape! The spokes rust, so the best way is to take the wheel apart, clean the rim and install new spokes and then true the wheel. I haven't done it yet but my spokes are rusty and thats what I've heard I will have to do.

When I passed my MSF beginners course, our instructor told us that graduates of that course were on average 18 months ahead of (in skills/ knowledge) those who didn't take it.

Well im not gonna be riding it for a bit. i just bought new tires, because the old ones were dry rotted worse than your grannys feet :). So i have the wheels off now and found that the front brake pads were in pieces, and the air box is full of gas. I know what to do about the brakes, any ideas about the gas filled airbox? I'v always had quads and 1 dirt bike growing up, and never had this problem.
