Hard Drive Crash lately? MozyHome backup tip
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:27:09 PM »
I just passed a big due date in my work, April 18th, (guess what i do) and was accosted by the most cliche of events. Murphy's Law crashed my hard drive at 10:30 PM on April 17th. Really.

I took care of work all right. My computer geek nephew techie diagnosed my problem and has replaced the hard drive.

But the point of this post is to recommend MozyHome as an internet backup vendor. I just use their free service and it has provided me complete protection. Except...

Unknown to me if you leave a program open, it can't backup the data files of that program. i had left my tax prep program open since Late April 16th, so i lost 36 hours of work. But I have the hard copies in house and can recreate it. Had I closed the program on the several of occasions where i left the desk, it would have backed it up.

But if you're not backing up and don't know of things like MozyHome that search the drive for changed files on a regular basis and backs them up into the clouds, well i thought you should know.

Yeah, it just shuts down, first happend over a year ago with a toshiba sattelite.

Kind of proud of it as I have carried it in a bacpack fr two years since I got the smokin deal on it, $1OO bux used.

It is now four years old, so I maybe should take your advice.

I use what I call my ' flask '   drive, an iomega 200 that is half full of music, not much else. Curved shape like a half pint pocket whisky nipper, pocket sized.

Yeah, but for free, fill it up with crap, things  you don't have to sweat about sharing. Still have had no need to do a storage site, but good to know it's availabe.

I do send things (especially photos) on g-mail just so they are backed up in my e-mail.

There is an element of trust for sure. But, backing up into the clouds is becoming industry standard so it must be secure, at least as secure as my laptop is sitting on my conference room table, or my desktop when I leave it in my ofice at night. Both of which are encrypted.  Mozy is also 128bit encrypted. And a breakdown in security would seal its doom.

I'm fully comfortable withit from what I've read and from how my techie explained it to me.

And for me there is the element of automatic. Whenever the computer is idle for X number of minutes (1 for me) it scans the drive for new files and backs it up. Extrernal drives are all well and good, but for me I'm tired of anything manual.

Another reason to have an external is that you can make a bootable backup of win7 on it.

Have to put in my 2 cents worth here.

I also have a 1TB external drive and it has saved me when I got hit by a virus.
It is only connected on the weekday I do a backup to prevent viruses and other problems.

My brother uses an offsite backup for his data, but it's almost all pictures. Maybe I should tell him he can
do it for free by emailing photos via google mail.

It may reduce the size of the files on some, not sure.

I think google picasa has a web saving/sharing feature that I have not used yet. It is free.

Of course there is photobucket and other image banks- zoomshare,  and socil networking sites, etc.

with the price of of 1tb and 2tb drives at $100 and under, there is no excuse not to have stuff backed up. you're probably fine with reputable cloud back-up servers but something about having it at home is nice as well. also, encrypting your hardrives at home=nobody nosing in your secret stuff ;)

Hey it was a hundred bucks less than a year old. I've used it hard every day for three years now.

Bought  new ones (toshiba satelite) for my aunt and another for my the house.  Found them on sale for $350.
