Topic: valve spring install

I acquired a cb550 that needs the valve springs reinstalled. Haven't investigated if I need a (motorcycle/Honda/Autozone tool) spring compressor or what to get this done.  Any advise?

I suppose a spring compressor built specifically for this task would be preferable.  However, I bought a cheap compressor at NAPA, then welded up a little adapter to make the reach to the spring...  I know it's not right, but it works for me!

Thanks nayto, that's what I was looking for...just cuz it's not what the HONDA service tech uses, doesn't make it wrong

The Sears $20 valve spring tool works just fine also. Don't need to go overboard on this unless you're planning on doing a lot of top end rebuilds

Thanks Shoeboxjoe, yeah just want to put this one back together that the P.O. took apart for an o-ring leak & he put viton valve seals. Sears tool will not need any adapting like the NAPA example?

I just looked at the one from Sears...  it's identical to the $20 one I got from NAPA.  The end that goes onto the spring cap won't reach on the 550's, the valve springs are recessed into the head too far.  I remember quite clearly buying the compressor, trying it and ended up cussing a bunch while welding the adapter  .  On a 750, no problem, the valve springs aren't recessed enough to be an issue.
