How much Marverl Mystery Oil and Seafoam to use?
« on: April 22, 2011, 06:18:43 AM »
Hey all.  I am getting ready to replace the clutch cover gasket and put oil back in the bike.  It was sitting for at least 2 years before I bought it.  It is a 1976 CB550.

I want to put some Marvel in the oil and some seafoam in the tank.  It smokes a bit and I am hoping this will maybe help a little.

Any thoughts on how much to use?

Thanks again.

the whole can of seafoam is meant for 25gal of gas so a fifth??
and i wouldnt think you would need more than one bottle of marvel for the oil..but remember to change the oil after running through the seafoam gas

For Seafoam in the tank, I use one ounce per gallon of gas every other tank for maintanence and 2 ounces per gallon for two consecutive tanks for "heavy" cleaning.  For Seafoam in the crank case, I put 4 ounces in the oil about 100 miles of modest riding before each oil change.  Then about a tablespoon on my ice cream!

So are you saying I can put it on my ice creram but not in my gas tank?  Got it  ;)

Thanks.  I will give it a try both in the tank and in the oil.

Joking aside, there' are even instructins on the can to put the stuff into the vacuum stream to "steam clean" your combustion chamber!  I've thought about how to do this on our bikes.  I wonder if one could connect a tube to ones vacuum port, use a valve to "regulate" the flow then dip the other end of the tube in the can of Seafoam.  Start he engine, let 'er get warm, then crack the valve open ever so slightly so that Seafoam is drawn up the tube.  Don't let TOO MUCH go up the tube lest ye hydrolock a cylinder and bend a rod!  Do this outside as I hear it smokes like all get out!

Yes, Seafoam is amazing!  I bet it would make a GREAT dessert topping... were it not LEATHAL to consume!

I does smoke like a freight train.  I did this on my Subaru about 10 years ago when I was in high school at a car wash one weekend with a buddy.  We left abruptly at the loud behest of several very unhappy people.  However, I must say it did smooth out the issues with the idle I was having at the time.

You may want to put some Marvel in each cylinder and let it sit for a few days. You may have a stuck ring and dry starts are real bad for the engine.

FWIW, if you put MM oil (or whatever) in the cylinders you may want to leave the plugs out and kick it over a few times (very messy!) to prevent possible hydrolock (very destructive).

A buddy bent a rod in his V/6 Ford Pickemup truck because of hydrolock (unknown leaky injector). Fairly expensive repair!

I love seafoam, When I first got my 350f it wouldn't rev above 4 grand, got some seafoam and new gas and went up to 7 almost right away, put a few ounces in my oil and cleaned my carbs for a 3rd time and now she'll get right up to 10 no problem, but she's running rich and the carbs need synced now so it's a little rough 8-9. I actually just bought a bottle of it today. :D Awesome stuff.

By the way it says on the bottle, something like this (Avg. 1 oz. per gallon) for gas somewhere on the back and for oil (Avg. 1.5 oz. per quart) looks just like that, I noticed that today.

You can overdo it and you will be fine.  So don't panic if you put more in.

I know people that will pump in 100% seafoam into the carbs and let it sit over night and drain in the morning.  They will usually change the plugs after they feel that have run most of it out of the carbs.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I've done this.  Works well!  With 4 bikes, a truck and a wagon, I find it more economical to buy Seafoam by the gallon and using a fluid pump to dispense it. :D

Somewhere I remember reading that Seafoam and MM are basically the same thing....lots of naphtha. with the exception of some alcohol added to Seafoam for drying of gas and more mineral oil added to MM

I have run the motor on 90% seafoam fed into the carbs, smokes up the neighborhood a bit smoothed things out a bit.

I went with MM in the oil and Seafoam in the gas.  I will do an oil change after the first 100 miles.  After taking it out for the first ride today it is running great and not smoking.  I think it just helps to get some gas through it and burn off some of the sediment.

What a great feeling to ride it after months of work.  Still needs some cleaning though.
