SOHC Rally Visits the Piano Man
« on: April 22, 2011, 11:00:34 AM »
So, I posted a while ago in the team Northeast thread about maybe the group stopping by Billy Joel's new shop out on Long Island to do up a photo op with his collection and possibly the Piano Man himself.

People are welcome to stop by on the weekends, when they open it to the public, but I realized that we may need to hit there on a weekday if the timing didn't work out perfectly.  So I sent an old school postal letter (how appropriate for our little endeavor of old school bikes!), just to see if they might respond.

I got this response via email today:

"Hi Scott,

Thank  you for the note regarding your rally.  We understand that you cannot pinpoint when you will hit our area but maybe we can touch base in late May to see your whereabouts.

Billy said it is okay to stop by the shop.

Let’s keep in touch,

Keri Aylward

Assistant to Billy Joel"

Very clever Jerry!  We are trying to keep this leg of the trip in a "New York State of mind" :)

Well, it took them long enough to get back to me. I originally thought that might be a good trip to tie 736 into the mix - since he didn't want to cone westward on the highways.

Oyster Bay is not terribly far from here.  Not sure how this would work into the plans.

I defer to you. It would probably require an extra day.

I took a look and it does take us much futher east. Let's see what the progress looks like. The Lizard still has a long way to go. A photo op with Billy Joel is huge, if that is really what will happen. It depends on how many folks are interested. We have some time.

Bobby, are you thinking that the ride to handoff in Woodstock will be a weekend?  Or is just going to be played by ear?

The weekend is the most logical and if it got here before the Memorial Day weekend that would be ideal since we have 3 days to get everything done. It also depends on the New England crew. You know of course we will get done whatever e set our minds to.  ;D

I'm just thinking that if we have iron a weekday before the big weekend hand off ride, mysel (and whoever else wanted to come along) could take ancruise out that way, get a photo and be back in line for the more straight forward (but hopefully winding) trip.

See I knew a solution would pop up.

Regardless of his musical style, his bike collection is said to be one hell of group of scoots.  And I figure raising the profile of the Rally, in any way we can, is good.  I'll just make sure we don't do video, in case he starts humming one of his tunes :)

I believe, as the "red rocker" in the 80's, Sammy was more likely to jump atop a windowless, red trans am on stage, with a wireless mic to boot!

Oh te days of mediocre rock and overblown touring budgets....

I've met Billy a couple times, he's definately cool and a genuine bike fanatic. One time I bumped into him in a country gas station way out on the Island, he was gassing-up his Kaw Drifter, I was on my CB750. We bs'ed about bikes. My buddy bought one of his Triumphs back in the 80's.
You know, its only 30 miles from his Oyster Bay bike shop and the Port Jefferson, NY/ Bridgeport, CT Ferry if anybody taking a boat to or from Ct and Long Island.
Is Godzilla in Manhattan before or after Oyster Bay? Whats the planned stops before and after Manhattan? I MIGHT take the ferry to New England if that crew is anywhere in that proximity.

It looks like the GZ will be headed to NYC for only a brief stop (not even sure ifmthe trip to Oyster Bay will be able to happen) and then off to Woodstock for the handoff.

Oyster Bay is just a few miles from my house. I'm excited about maybe making that a stop on the tour. You did a great job Scott. I'm free on Sat and Sunday of the Memorial Weekend, but because i'm a Fire Chaplain, Monday is my big day with a service in the morning and a parade down the middle of town. Keep up the good work!!!

If you need gas in Orange county NY stop at:

Mavrix Motor Sports
21 Dunning Road
Middletown, NY 10940-2212
(845) 344-2453

My cousins collection of old Hondas is on display there.  His CL305 and CB500 are nice.
