I know that cold blooded starting is a typical issue with these bikes, I have searched through this forum and learned a lot about 'newer' 650's with CV carbs, but there is nothing much on the older bikes with mechanical slide carbs.
Here's my issue: In the morning I will fire the bike up, let it idle in the driveway at full choke while I suit up, and then ride for 3-5 miles with the choke held open before it will idle on it's own. Running on full choke for so long can't possibly be good for the bike but what troubles me the most is that the bike will often throw a tantrum between starting up and suiting up where it won't run on all 4 cylinders below about 4,000 rpm. I'm not suspecting the spark plugs are to blame because it did this same thing when it had a set of brand new plugs.
The carbs are clean so should I try having them synced?
The exhaust has always smelled a little rich, but shouldn't that make it easier to start?
