where to get second compression ring ?
« on: April 08, 2006, 11:36:13 PM »
I just broke second compression ring. This is how far gasket replacement can take you ;).
How interchangeable the rings between the models? I have 78 750K engine.  Can I get couple rings for it in dealership ?

Thank you for advice.

You will have to buy a complete piston set of rings as they dont come individual, check for oversize and ask dave silver www.davidsilverspares.co.uk There are a couple of different sets that dont interchange between models but cant remember which is which

Call Hastings manufacturer,  I looked them up on the web, they can get you one single ring for just about any size and may have the one you wnat in stock.

They were the only ones that had the rings for my Venolia 65mm boogers!

Thanks! I ordered them at dealership and it cost $47 for the set.  I might break another one putting it together, so it will not hurt to have spares at hand ..  I measured the cylinders bore and it is below the service limit in the shop manual so I hope standard size will fit..

Why are you breaking them? I used a radiator hose clamp just tight enough to squeeze the rings to get them started into the cylinder.I also helps if you have 2 sets of hands.

it seemed to go so easy with hand and screwdriver that I did not try to make a ring compressor ..  Did you use hose clamp on a shim which would go in with the ring and then to pull it out ?

I tightened the hose clamp just enough to compress the rings and tapped the head lightly, the hose clamp slips down as you do this and all three rings are started in the clyinder. It helps if you have 2 people.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Never put a screwdriver on a piston ring. That's what Popcycle sticks were invented for.
