what is a '76 CB750F? - Silly me -
« on: April 24, 2011, 07:54:44 PM »
Hi guys, in a recent conversation with a "fair weather" friend, I discovered he has a '76 CB750F in a shed that "skipped a cog on the camchain" and he doesn't want to bother fixing it and considered selling it to me...no money has been discussed to date. He claims it's the "first cafe racer style" which I don't believe but am not an expert in this field...
Is this bike unique? Can anyone share a picture of one as I don't have a clue what this bike should look like? I am totally lost with the jargon of these 750's as there seems to be many different models. I am a total rookie when it comes to the 750's. :-[ I know there is K3's and K4's etc but don't have the foggiest idea how they are different... :-\

Any suggestions to value would be appreciated also but this post is more about finding out if I have found something of value or not. I know a sandcast bike is worth more but wouldn't know a sandcast if someone dropped one off on my driveway (so embarassed!  :-[)

I have a 75F which is the forerunner to the 76F. They are virtually the same. Some could say the 75/76 were first or at least early production "cafe style" bikes. A cowl rear seat, 4-1 pipes, relatively lower bars. But the 75 400F may have been the first, or at least tied. And of course you run afoul of the purists who might say what's a production "Cafe style" bike anyway. Cafe styles come from the owners, not the factories, etc.

Highly unlikely it skipped a cog on the cam chain. That's just not something that happens. Cam chains break altogether, and sometimes a cam will twist in half from poor oiling, but that's 99% of the time after an overhaul where the builder used silicone sealing product.
I'd want to know whats really wrong with the engine. Get it out in the light, pull all the tappet covers and the ignition cover and turn it thru some revolutions.

Oh yeah, not particularly rare either, IMO. Quite a distance from sandcast which were primarily 69 and possibly a 70.

Unless the chassis is in great shape, and its not, with a bum engine I'd say $300 to $500 tops. I'd prefer to get it for less even. Even if it looked great and was low mileage, age takes its toll on the rubber parts, fork oil, shock oil, swingarm bushings rust up, cables corrode internally, instruments get moisture inside, carbs are a wreck, gas tanks are rusted, etc.

His claim about it being the "first cafe racer style" is just him trying to latch onto the fact that "cafe racer" is the style du jour, and hoping he can get a little extra money out of it.  Do not fall victim to that marketing tactic.

The '76 750F is not especially rare or valuable as compared to the other sohc4's of its same time.  It should be taken at face value and with consideration to its current mechanical and cosmetic state.  If you want to see pictures just look in the gallery, or even in the sohc4.net website model guide which will show a picture of each model year and describe the differences between them.

As for the "skipped a cog on the camchain".  There's no telling what that may mean.  It could be as simple as pulling the motor and re-aligning the camshaft with the crankshaft, or it could mean a total top end rebuild.  Or he may have no idea what he's talking about and it may have just run out of gas.  You NEVER know until you get in there yourself to see what's going on.  Never take the word of the seller.

Search for the 750 F thread there are lots of pictures. They are a different look from the early K's but I like em.

Here's my '76 cb750F.  You can see the seat in the background of the second picture.  Has a longer more "sporty" (whatever that means) looking tank, a cowl over the back of the seat, and a mediocre 4-1 exhaust.

Thanks for all the pointers guys!
One question... google images shows the CB750F with 4 into 1 and bikes with 4 singles (2 on each side)... I think the "F" means 4 into 1 - correct?

Yes, both the 550 and 750 "F" models had a 4-1 exhaust system.
