New entry from Europe
« on: April 25, 2011, 02:37:28 AM »
G'Day!

brief introduction:
Name: Martin Brunner
Age: 46 and counting
Location: Vienna, Austria (that's in Europe, roos are quite rare around here  ;) )

Riding since '92, mostly my Honda ST1100 (or Pan-European as its badged here), seriously touring, Scotland, UK, France, Spain, Portugal, etc... got about 200.000km on this model, learned all maintenance tricks from my best friend, a passionate, skilled Honda mechanic.

Dunno what bit me, but all over sudden getting an old naked for refurbing urged... the ST is just too reliable and literally bulletproof  ;D
One friend talks to another, a few days later I've the cell number off a guy who has two CB500/4s he wants to sell...
You know the rest, hired a trailer and dragged the prey home...  :D

One is a '73, but with a 'special title' issued in '78, actually legalizing the 4-1 Marving, intake-ports, rear-sets, modified seat and clamp-on handles  8)
That's a keeper and I plan to 'cafe' it for riding around town and short day-trips (gonna be fun with them LEOs though... ;D )

The other is a '76, complete with 4 in 4 exhaust, I plan to refurb to OEM (it does have an M-style bar however) and sell it to a caring new owner.

Both mounts are a mess, a good number of POs went wild on them over the past decades, could call it 'authentic' as this is how it went back then, alone the several layers of paint on them tanks and other parts...  ;)
Wiring harness have been tinkered with, some frame tabs cut off, others welded on, the '73 has gotten the shorter swing-arm from an '84 CB or such...
But the engines and gear boxes are dry, no parts missing, no bends or cracks on them frames, one has the hardware for twin-disk brakes (one side got removed some day in the past, leaving the tabs on the fork bottom abandoned)
So some deep work dawning (my mech already announced that we're going to be in agony and use a LOT of 'fancy language' while working on them  ;) ), getting the frames sanded down, etc... but guys do need a hobby  ;D

Currently the CBs are in storage, till I've finished the refurb on the other '94 ST1100 I'd bought recently (it will receive the police spec parts with amber flashers to serve as 'event marshal' at the next Gathering or such), but I'm already in deep search for spares and parts for them CB500/4s as we're going to start on them within the next few weeks.

I've lurked over this forum for some time and want to congrat the members for their really nice projects!!
We'll see if I can cope with the level presented, and I'm going to be happy for all tips and ideas from you guys out there.

Brief view on what I've gotten here:

cheers and keep it on the black bits

Hi Martin.

Ahhh...  a period "bikini" fairing!

What do you mean "legalised"? Do you have to register mods to your bike?  I know the Swiss are fairly strict but the Austrians?

Hi Steve,

Yeah, but that 'bikini'-thing is quite mangled, it has been mounted with HILTI steel-bands  :o (the ones you'd hang ducts and piping onto your basement ceiling... ??? ), one side 'trimmed' with an angle-grinder or such, also the screen misses a bit and I doubt to find a replacement.
The blue tank actually belongs to the bike with the blue fender, the red tank is done however... like a noodle filter... lid rusted shut, needed a tire-bar to pry it open... brown dust blew out once it gave in...  :-[
Sad, but back then people didn't realy care, they'd just 'farkelt' along with whatever they could get their claws on  ;)

'modding' is quite difficult over here, especially on exhaust, different tires/rims and lights/indicators them LEOs will be all over you... (especially when they haven't fulfilled their quaterly quotes...  ;) )
Anything that's suspicious of increasing the power-output (exhaust, carbs, overbore) would be insurance- and tax-fraud...
This is why that 'special title' comes so valuable, just no way to get something like a Marving or those 'intake-funnels' legalized these days <beg>  ;D
(no such issues with a 100% stock ST1100 however, last night I rushed over an 'almost' red light, right in front of them cops... they didn't even notice... try the same with a Marving screaming on a CB500/4, already while still 3 blocks away their lights will get on  ;D )

I will have to stay with the technicals as shown in the photos fixed into the title anno '78:

Changing tank and seat, as well as the position of the instruments (lowered, more horizontal) might be less of an issue.
Dual disk brakes will cause a raised eyebrow, but as long as I use OEM parts I might get away with it...

Thanx for the invitation, had already lurked there too, expect me there soon  8)

That's an awesome avatar. Is that you? Where?

My local club (www.tvam.org) took 150 bikes to the Ring last year. We booked the circuit for the entire day. Some of the photos are brilliant. RTs, GSs, Pans, Wings, FJRs etc all at incredible angles.

@ mec, Grüße retour!  8)

@ Steve, taken at one of our annual springtime motorcycle safety lessons held by the ÖAMTC (equivalent to your AA) by professional instructors, consisting of turn techniques (its all about the look ;) ) , emergency braking and maneuvering practice, slow/narrow maneuvering and at the final some high speed cornering practice on a 'handling course', which is great fun due the high traction of the racetrack blacktop there (sole of left boot is through again... bugger...  ;D always the problem with them big hoofs hanging off...)
Them lectures are absolutely worth the money and the time, getting rid of the 'winter stiffness', loosing some 'bad habits' we all grow by the time, and the instructors also have a lot to teach to the pillion/s we/I run the training with, as both have to be 'one' on the mount and it increases also her confidence.
And it does help a lot to get smooth and competent again on your motorcycle after the 'grounding time' over the winter.

After having lived in Germany for the first 34 years of my life collecting tickets for traffic violations and now being in Texas since 11 years, I always enjoy sending my German friends pictures of my builds here.....My K7 is registered as an "Antique Motorcycle" which means I can basically do whatever I want...no TUEV here and riding all year long  :)

Viel Spass beim Schrauben!

Hi,

getting it registered as 'oldtimer' might be a way, but I've to check how strict they would be about it appearing exactly like on them pics over here, which would leave no room for personal mods at all... (I'm honestly not too keen about the saddle showed in the b/w pics above... :-\ )

Yep, in the US and in UK you guys can just 'build away' however you please (I once saw a motorized sofa roaring through a city in UK once  ;D ), no such thing here in the old world (OK for several reasons as I might add...)

BTW I'm in search of a 'cleaned' upper triple for my CB500/4 (without h/bar brackets), like the one I saw on a building-thread around here, but wonder if such will provide the identical step/elevation between the fork tube clamps and the steering stem mount?

STs are absolute brave touring horses and also making brilliant commuters (the psychological effect towards cagers AKA mobile phone-boots is enorm...), requiring a rather small amount of maintenance and will last forever when receiving a little TLC.
Disappointing that Honda changed course and does not seem to bring out a similar Sport-Tourer anymore, it seems that everything will be VRF-based from now on... already that ST1300 moved away from the 'original', character, ergos, quite a list of small items that might not seem big when seen by themself, but add up in total...
I tested the 1300 intensive over a full weekend, solo and two up... and we both were literally 'relieved' when we slipped back on the old 1100, that big comfy saddle welcoming us, handlebar and controls at the right sport and went like '...ahhh... yeah, much better...' as the soft, barely audible, non vibrating engine fired on a simple blip on that ON button...
The ST1100 might be 'old' and 'analogue' but it just suits me, my needs and expectations way too well...
