Simple Rear Set Upgrade for 550s
« on: April 25, 2011, 02:43:46 PM »
Just snagged and installed a set of CB400F supersport pegs, shifter linkage, shift lever, and brake lever off ebay for 60 bucks.  It was a very easy straight swap for the stock pegs and foot controls.  I have a long frame and long arms so I sit pretty far back on the seat. The extra 4 inches it moves my feet back brings them right under my center of gravity which is much more comfortable.  I need to get a 550F kick lever that clears the lever, but I usually use the starter, so not crucial for now.

I'm totally on board with this.  I've wanted rearsets for my 550F1 since I bought it, just couldn't bring myself too spend the ridiculous amount of money on the aftermarket stuff.

That was where I was at.  Plus there's no billet aluminum on my near original bike, so fancy machined stuff would look out of place.  This looks nearly stock.  I got pretty lucky that I emailed a guy that was selling a lot of 4 CB400Fs assuming he would have some parts and he had a complete set available.  Make sure you get the set from a 75 or 76, in 77 they changed to non-rear set style pegs and controls.

So the kick starter hits the brake lever?  Is it completely unusable now?

These are factory stock items from 400F?

Totally stock factory 400F parts.

Although the right side peg folds out of the way, the kick lever hits the hinge of the peg mount.  It does allow me to give it like a 1/4 kick, but not enough to be functional.

I have an extra kick lever that I tried to heat up with a torch and bend a bit, but couldn't get it to budge.  Apparently the 550F (supersport) lever will clear the peg mount as it has a bend in it.

Hmm I wonder if this would work on a '79 CB650...

I'm in the process of doing this on my CB500, too. Just waiting on the brake lever to get back (having it reshaped to fit closer to the engine, like the stock CB500).
I was going to do a full write up on it when I got around to installing them.

OneWheel, did you have any clearance issues on the shift linkage or shifter arm?

full writeup will be appreciated, this is on my list of things to do.. I wonder if the kickstart will work with the supersport without modification.

I've yet to bolt them on, but I'm told that you need the 550F kick starter to clear the (folding) 400F foot peg.

I'll be adding 400F bars at the same time, so stay tuned.

I've got a 550F kick lever en route from another member.  I'll be the guinea pig and let you all know if it clears the folding 400 peg.

Honestly though, there really is no "complete write up" necessary.  Remove rider pegs, brake lever, shift lever....replace with CB400F parts.  The shift linkage did rub the engine case but I gave it a slight bend and now it's perfect.  The only thing that's tricky is the rear brake switch as there isn't a place to hook the spring.  I currently have a race wire wrapped around the brake lever that connects to the spring, works fine.

All of these things you mention and a few more will be addressed when I do it. Some with a slightly different twist to how you did it.

The 550K kick lever won't cure the problem. You need the 550F lever with the bend in it.

That's exactly what I've got coming.  And it's not the bend that's crucial about the F lever, but the extra 1" or so the hinge protrudes out from the case that allows it to clear the peg.  I'll post the differences when I get it.

OP, mind if I ask how tall you are?  Riding my 550F is a bit uncomfortable while trying to operate the rear brake, and I'm wondering if we're in the same boat.

I was going to do a full write up on it when I got around to installing them.

You should post a link up when you get around to it.

Will do. Did some minor mods to the brake lever today. I'm trying to wait until everything is actually on the bike until I post up what I've done, pics, etc. With my work schedule, that may be next week, though.

Got the 550F kick lever installed.  Works perfectly!  When folded up, it does contact the right side engine case a bit, but better than nothing.  I'll post picks tonight.

A quick question about the 400F sets.....are the peg assemblies (the actual peg with the rubber cover) for the 550 interchangeable with the 400F sets?  In other words, could one take the peg/foot rest part off of the stock 550 peg mounts and put them onto the 400F sets?  I've got a line on a set of 400F rearsets, but the rubber foot rests/pegs on them are really bad.....and I have a spare set of 550 pegs laying around that are in great shape.  Will they work?  They certainly look the same....but I can't tell for sure.

I wouldn't think so. The 400F peg rubber parts actually bolt on.
