cb550 top end question
« on: April 25, 2011, 07:25:01 PM »
I'm in the process of rebuilding a cb550k0. I have rebuilt the chassis and am in the process of re-freshening the motor and want to be sure I get this right. To level set, this is my first Honda rebuild and I am trying really hard to do it right. After cleaning up the cylinder head and lapping the valves, I began the reassembly process. After figuring out the ballet dance that is assembling the cam shaft, I have run into an issue that I need your help with. I am off about 1/2 a chain link to get the cam aligned with top dead center. (see attached from the service manual)  The manual says the cam notch should be in the middle and mine is right at the edge of the  notch. My Eyeball says its off 1/2 of a chain link.

Is this correct or do I have a problem?
The diagram in the service manual is slightly different than what I have so I am just trying to be sure I am doing this right.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You should be lined up with the other line to the left.  The right line is for timing.

What cbGhia sez. If it's still off then figure out which way the chain needs to go, loosen the cam tensioner, remove the bolts from the cam sprocket then you can inchworm the chain one tooth at a time. Bolt everything back up, tighten up the chain tensioner and recheck your alignment.

as posted above you are on the the fire mark, rotate it to the correct tdc mark, now your cam is going to be slightly further out of time, reset the chain on the cam gear to suit, they can be a bit of a fiddle, count ten, take a break,, but must be done right.

Thanks guys.
I was confused with what was printed in the manual vs what my bike looked like. TDC looked like the line between the T & F marks. I'll recalibrate and adjust the chain and let you know how it goes.

Success...
I set to the proper TDC line and adjusted the chain one link. The cam notch is right in the center where it should be.
Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it. ;D
