APE Clutch kit help!
« on: April 25, 2011, 07:35:14 PM »
Good Evening,

I just started to install my APE clutch for my 72 CB750.  I got a little concerned about putting it back together right, so I consulted some old posts.  Mainly on the clutch lifter install and how easy I could break it if I wasn't careful.  Well I simply screwed in two screws without any clutch springs to see if the lifter would lock-up against the posts on the clutch hub.  It seemed to lock-up, but the thrust lifter bearing would not rotate.  Now I had justed finger tighten the bolts but does this make sense?  Did APE have a taller stack of plates than stock?  This is the kit with the 2 extra plates and thinner friction discs.

I would like to ride on a trip Friday, and I am really debating weather to put it back stock for now, maybe use the new springs and ditch this new clutch pack.

Someone help.

Update, I have decided to ditch APE for now.  Apparently I had the pressure plate not indexed with the clutch hub.  Everything is back on with the thrust plate hand tightened.  I have read these old threads in the AL will strip so in order for me to prevent that should I lightly torque with some loctite applied?  Blue or Red?  OR just torque to spec in a 2 step or 3 step fashion?

Also should I be applying any grease to the lifter ball cluster, type "high temp".

Anyone please chime in here while I still have this apart I would greatly appreciate it and I am sorry for not saying please help on my last post.

Thanks again,
Greg.
