crazy idea
« on: April 27, 2011, 05:44:50 AM »
Would it be possible to build a 550 and or 750 from spare parts from our members. Maybe a friendly competition. I imagine most sohc members are in the USA, do a few of you guys get together, would anyone trustworthy do this for the team. I would be prepared to donate a few spares of my 550 through the post. Maybe they could be sold for charity or be our mascot bikes. There are hundreds of members can we ask everyone to donate one thing each. Am i crazy or can it happen.

I would suggest a name for it, "Frankenbike," but too bad it's already in use.  :D

I know of at least one member that has a bike shop and theres probably alot more ,it would probably only work if one of these guys started with a frame and wheels (or anyone for that matter with a shed and a bit of time on their hands)and let the rest of us know what they wanted and we could put our hand up and say iv'e got one of those i'll send it etc. It doesn't have to win bike of the month or anything just something we made together. You never know where it might lead, magazines, caferacer tv or it might just be special to us. Iv'e heard you Americans can do anything ;) All we need is a volunteer.

Someone can donate a sidestand that can then be taken off the final product to save weight.

An airbox that gets pulled off in favor of emgo pods.

Push cable for the throttle.

Oil (but what kind?).

And definitely no front fender or brace.

I can dig it.  I should have a few extra 750 parts laying around after I finish my build.  I also have a 650 4-1 available. This is going to be awesome!

Is there any one out there that doesn't think this is a hair brain scheme and could be the builder and post pics of regular progress. We probably need someone with a frame at least to get started. How many things have we ordered for our own bikes(dozens) not to mention money. I'd be happy to throw a few things in a box and send it off. Maybe if one guy has had enough he could chuck it on a trailer and take it to another guy that wants to give it a go.

All kidding aside, I would be interested in this if the end goal was an auction where the proceeds would go to a non profit or maybe 50 percent to this site and 50 percent to a non profit that everyone can support?

Well if gnarlycharlie has got a spare frame and wants to be the first builder i am prepared to send him a few spare parts that i have got, that is if its a 550 frame. Or would it make more sense for the builder to put out a list of 12 or so items he wants like forks or tripple trees or handle bars etc that can go straight on the bike so he hasn't got bits lying all around the place. If we did it for charity i'm sure we would get alot more support maybe something to do with kids, as most of us are probably dads.

Everything I have is 750. thats another point to consider. It would be best to shoot for the bike that is most common on here. 550 or 750?  Obviously no 69 750's  :P

All of the stuff that I have to offer would be coming off 750's .  Right now I have a basket that I am keeping all the crap that I am either replacing or upgrading while I build out a cafe bike.  It's either here or ebay with it..

Maybe members could drive the bigger stuff, relay fashion, to the destination.  20 - 50 miles to another members place and they can do the same until it reaches the destination.  That could be some members contribution to the cause.  Just a thought.

Good idea mj stone. The next step is for some one to start the ball rolling. One member mentioned he had a frame to start with, if he wants to start the ball rolling let us know if its a 550 or 750 frame lets just go with it. If other people want to contribute that havent got parts for that size bike they can buy something of ebay and send it to the build address. As long as we get a list of what we need. There will be people that can do or spend more than others the point is to do what we can.
