oil experience
« on: April 27, 2011, 10:35:05 AM »
Well I am trying to start anything I am just reporting on my results.
CB550 34K purchased and immediately changed oil using honda4 10w30.  1500 miles drained oil and it was burned.  Smelled burned .looked lumpy. kind of watery like it lost its viscosity.  Changed to Mobil One 1500 miles drained oil oil looked great smelled like oil and it was still almost transluscent.  I did develop a little seepage in one gasket that was not there before.  Now I am running Rotella synthetic blend.  The tranny shifts easier than it did and the bike seems quieter although it may just be me.

1981 650C 3800 miles changed oil to Pennzoil 10W30 1500 miles oil was black but shiny and much better than the Honda stuff from the 550.  Changed oil to Mobil one and had same results as the 550 and now I am on to Rotella.  Again this bike seems to shift easier too.
Changed the filter each time.  I am hoping for good results from the Rotella T.  See you in 1500 miles.

I thought that only anecdotal information was allowed in an Oil Thread rather than empirical data..... ;)

Not that it matters to some, but I had excellent luck with the rotella synthetic, the T was good but not as good as the synth.

I'm not knocking Wardenerd's post by any means, but I don't see any empirical data in it.  Only anecdotal evidence.

I find it hard to believe that the "burned" and lumpy qualities of the Honda oil were nothing more than a flushing affect, and if you had done a proper flush. you wouldn't be blaming the Honda oil.

Yeah this is all anecdotal but it can still be helpful sometimes.
I agree with the 3 man. It is most likely sludge from old oil that got cleaned off.

Well ok, you are correct. I was loosely interpreting his having tried different oils as empirical while trying to be witty.
Not my only failed post of the day. :P
