recessed ignition questions
« on: April 29, 2011, 07:07:10 PM »
Today member Jonnie and I went to my friend's house so he could look at a cb350 project he was thinking of buying. While looking through a box of random cycle parts I came across what I assume is one of the holy grail sandcast parts, a recessed ignition. Months ago I found a round connector ignition switch in  the same type of mount and thanks to this thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=64728.msg709085#msg709085 it was identified as being from a cb/cl450. I guess I'm wondering if the recessed ignition was ever used on cb/cl450's of the same year as the 750 or did some previous 450 owner go looking for a replacement round connector switch and end up with a 750 recessed switch? I would like to know for sure before I sell the switch. Don't want to misrepresent it. Also, what do you figure it's worth (I know, I know)? No auctions to watch on ebay right now. There's no keys for it so that would bring the value down a bit. Suppose I'll probably end up putting it on ebay and I'll get what I get.

Though relatively difficult to find and pricey, their use was not limited to sandcasts only. I have a recessed ignition on my K0 and its build date is 11/69. As I understand it, these, in conjunction with the "plugged" key was to help keep the elements out. According to legend, the opposite was true and they stopped using this combination.. dunno.  ???

Yepper, that looks like it.  I see them on ebay frequently going for ~$200-400!!  (YMMV)
Depends on condition and the higher prices are for switches that include the key although keys are available from various sources also for a price.  Realistically ~$100 is a more reasonable expectation, imho.

There's a lot of ignition switches on ebay that look good in the pix but may be too worn or corroded to be used.

thanks for the replies! I think I can get a plain key for it at a local dealer. Then I will test it to see if it's good before I sell it.

Did a CB750 ignition bracket ever look like that? I don't think so. My guess is it may be a CB750 style early switch, but it was never on a CB750 but something else. Most likely a CB450 of that limtd era.

If it carries a different part number, the pig tail may be of different length and not proper for a CB750 restore. That's just conjecture something to be checked out, I don't know for sure.
