Go to the salvage yard or eBay and get another one. This one is not worth messing with.

It looks to me like it has been rethreaded for maybe a standard/nut.. may work if you find correct nut/washer.
Correct threads aremuch finer than that.

I looked a 77 lower tree today, its fairly thin there, so if rethtreaded would be pretty weak.

77/78 both will fit but lower tree is notched on 77 for brake junction (78 had 1 pce line)

A bit pricey, but new ;)

That ebay one looks nothing like my 77 lower.

Go would look for a used one and make sure the seller guantees the threads are good.  They are very fine and easy to bugger up.  Ideally get one with the top nut on it as well, if for no other reason than it will protect the threads during shipping.

man, looks like a plumber did the work on that steering stem.. maybe it isn't original to begin with? Anyway, whatever it costs, this is one place you don't want to get cheap with... do what it takes, make it safe.

I agree with rotortiller. I understood that procedure for this top nut was tighten down, then back off till almost loose. So I figured there was very little stress on these threads. HOWEVER, I dont think I want to use it.

Rotortiller, those washers on your lower tree bolts look like headbolt washers. I would run thinner ones, just caise if there is any misalignment they can bed in a bit.
