Topic: Front Axle removal Quest.

Can anyone pleas explain to me how to remove the front axle from the hub assembly/speedo drive. The bike is a 77 CB550F. My initial attempt was to beat it senseless until it came out, however I took a step back and decide to ask for help. I did search it out and had no luck.

I had the same problem with a front axle on a 76 750 hub.  I was able to remove the bearing retainer with its rubber dust seal then use penetrating oil and heat from a propane torch to remove the axle.  The collar was stuck to the axle with what appeared to be carbon.  The bearing had failed which must have heated the area and cooked whatever was between the collar and the axle.
Heating the collar allowed me to knock the axle free with a mallet.
 
Now I'm wrestling with a 400F front axle.  The bearings seem to be fine, but the axle is not sliding out like it should.
I'm in the process of removing the bearing retainer then plan to take a hard look at the collar.  I've already found rust on the axle nut and in the general area of the collar.  I plan to use the same approach with the penetrating oil and heat once I remove the bearing retainer.
Both of the wheels I mention were purchased on EBay and are used as spares so I had/have time to work on them.  Care needs to be taken when using the torch because of the close proximity of the aluminum hub to the heat source.

Can I assume that to remove the axle that you unscrewed the end prior to thinking about beating on it? If not try that then the axle should push through.
