Engine want fire... any help appreciated
« on: April 29, 2011, 11:49:25 AM »
Hi all  :)
I have just redone my electrical wiring, and then also excluded the starter (just kick for me now).
Bike run fine before - or at least almost. Sometimes it wouldnt run on all 4 cylinders immediatly, but it always come in with a couple of revs... Anyway, it always fired pretty much right away.
I have also fixed a bad wire from one of the coils, not sure if that was the problem though... more likely to be a fuelproblem maybe?

Back to the problem....Now i cant get it to fire at all!
I have checked that i have sparks on both the outher cylinders (dont have the correct tool to get out the inner two sparkplugs). When trying to start, my plugs also get wet by gasoline - so, i have spark, and gas. Also drained the carbs and tried again.
Any idea what i should do next? I assume my wiring is ok as long as i get sparks?

What bike? The one in your avatar? Did it fire up easily with the kick start before you removed the starter? Was it the coil for 2 & 3 that you repaired? You don't have to pull the spark plugs to test for fire. Just pull the caps from the center cylinders and use a plug from the outer cylinders to test.
If your plugs are fouled, it will be hard to start until you replace them or make sure they are dry. You might just have to let the inner plugs dry out over time, if you can't pull them.

How is the charge on your battery? Weak spark won't always fire a bike over either, especially if your plugs are wet.

When using the kick start, stay away from twisting the throttle. This will wet the plugs quickly if it's not firing.

Yes, its the bike in my avatar - 77 550. My head isnt with me today...of course i could have used the plug from the outer cylinder, i will try tomorrow for sure. Bike started fine with the kick before.
I dont remember wich one of the cables that was bad, i`ll check tomorrow.

Hmmm...battery might not been charged the best when i think about it. New battery, but haven run the bike to much. I`ll charge it and see if that can help.

Thanks Silverback

Okey, im giving up, and will wire up the starter and startersolenoid just to get the bike running.
But what am i missing now.... Yellow/red from solenoid to button - but what is that red/green from the solenoid??
Other than that, i have the cable to the batt, and one to the starter itself.

Green/Red goes from the starter solenoid to the single rectifier diode.

Unless you hot-line the starter you will need it... the green/red is the ground line for the solenoid switch magnet.

If your engine politely asks for fire by all means give it fire.

I was just perusing the '77 550k wiring diagram.  It appears that if everything is connected properly, the neutral indicator switch needs to be active in order for the starter solenoid to operate.  So, the transmission needs to be in neutral for the starter to spin... that's assuming everything is connected correctly and the neutral switch is working.

Looks maybe like my plugs are drowning.. :-(
Just maybe though.... what i find very strange is that i dont get the smallest ignition anymore. Not anything.
It bothers me, because now its soon time to get it on the road.
