Weird happenings with Google Chrome
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:22:15 AM »
First off, I don't profess to be a computer genius. I know just enough to screw up my PC from time to time.

Recently, several websites/forums I belong to stopped saving my username and/or password. The auto fill-in feature used to do this for me. Some sites are unaffected.
Then, in my email (free Hotmail account), I started getting emails that are blank. But, when I reply to the emails, I can see the text and attachments. Some of these emails are from people in my "contacts" list and "safe" list.

I haven't changed anything recently. There have been some normal auto-updates, but I haven't changed any settings. Chrome is up to date and the latest version.
Any idea what I can check to return all this stuff back to normal?

Have you tried a different browser, or computer, for that matter?

Most antivirus suites don't support chrome yet.

I use chrome for browsing CL, ebay, etc.  I use IE9 for secure transactions & work & personal email.  It's noticeably slower, but the security factor is what counts.

It sounds like you might have a virus or a data logger, I just switched to Avast "free" - works good, but it's only free for a month...

Good luck!

I've had Chrome for several months and it hasn't done this. I ran all my scans and checked for virus/mal-ware and found nothing.

I wonder if it's part of a Chrome update that has caused this?

Those saved usernames and passwords aren't saved at the websites, they are saved on your computer.  Somehow you are erasing them.

You may just need to clear your cache and cookies.  Go to the wrench on the upper right and then go to tools > clear browsing history.  Where it says Obliterate the following items from: choose  from the beginning of time.  check the boxes for delete cookies and empty the cache.  then click clear browsing data.  Close chrome completely and restart.

I have never heard anyone say they use IE9 for its security factor before. I use Firefox, much faster than IE and more secure.
Avast Free is free forever for just the anti-virus, I have used both AVG and Comodo, both do a free anti-virus and software firewall suite and the hardware firewall in my router keeps me invisible to the outside world.

+1000000   Internet Explorer sucks and i wouldn't trust it as far as i could throw it......It is the worst browser for virus attacks, always has been... I use Kaspersky  AV and have never had a problem..

Once again, into the fray.  This is almost as good as an oil thread.

All you guys using AVG, Avast, Kaspersky, and such.  Don't you get tired of the nag?  Even if it only happens once a year, you still get the sales pitch to buy the "full" version of these, which I've used and never seen them stop anything.  While I realize the feeling to hate everything Microsoft, I would suggest their totally free(no full version to buy) Microsoft Security Essentials.  Microsoft has a vested interest in keeping you virus free, and it does a good job.  I go to some pretty unseemly places in this here intarweb, and it notifies me every time it stops something.

Just sayin'.

I beg to differ, i have been using Kaspersky for about 5 years and it won't even let me open any site that has a virus on it,well it gives me the option but i have NEVER had a virus on my system whilst using Kaspersky. I use the full paid version {around 30 bucks a year} and it is excellent., it also alerts me if there is a virus in my email.  I have a good friend that is a computer tech and he is a whizz with computers, i would rather take his advice as it has always helped me. I surf everything and get virus warnings and the rest, never had an infection with Kaspersky, i also use adaware and CC cleaner for smaller rubbish. IE has more viruses written for it than any other browser, always has. I use Mozilla and have for about 6 years, it is more stable and faster than IE. I have talked to plenty of computer techs and none i know use IE. Microsoft is bombarded with viruses, why do you think there is a never ending stream of security updates, especially for IE, i now don't use any of the IE stuff and won't be in the future either.....Its really easy to see what my anti virus stops as it has a list on the front page, nothing gets through........

Well, Mick, my comments weren't aimed at you or others who pay for anti-virus.  But more at those who use the free versions.  Free versions will nag you to buy the full versions, and usually make you uninstall the old free version before you can get the new free version.  And I agree on using Ccleaner.  I also use Malware Bytes, Spybot, and Comodo.  Relying on one program when there are so many types of threats is not a good idea.
