1967 CB450....Whats it worth??
« on: May 03, 2011, 08:25:05 AM »
I've always thought black bombers were cool, never even considered buying one though....found one for sale, and I'm curious on what these things are worth...I don't have a price on it yet....so let's assume the bike doesn't run, but is complete, and not missing anything...I assume it would need to be fully restored to be a show quality bike...or possibly just cleaned up a little to ride....I have an idea of what I can buy it for, but I want to hear some of your opinions first.

This picture is all I have...yes, that's a 350 twin on the left, a suzuki to the right of the bomber, and a crazy 750 chopper beside that...

Thanks guys!

Eh - they're hardly desirable at all.  You should prolly stay away from that pile o' junk.  Where, exactly, did you say it was located?

:D

I dunno.  Someone'll chime in, though.

It's blue ??!!
Don't think I've ever seen a blue one.

At any rate, they're pricey, especially in good condition.
Many original parts are very hard to find, so original condition drives the price up further.
If it's original (not sure about the blue paint) and actually runs well, it wouldn't surprise me to see a $3-4K price on it.
Most guys buy K0's to restore them.

I was confused by the blue too...I think blue was available in '68..? But i'm not 100% sure...I know nothing about these...

I found a couple more pictures of the bike in question...looks complete to me...It has the early K0 sidecovers...but the tank is blue like a K1...?

I'm still waiting to hear if it runs or not...

That 750 chopper looks like a 400f to me.

I believe all CB450 K0's were Black - thus the nickname. My Honda history book states that dealers in England painted some of them Red to get them sold. I own a 1967 and really, really enjoyed restoring it. I would not do another - too expensive to do right. There are many parts that are no longer available and some are essential - seat hinges for one. I spent $2,300 having 25 sets made and luckily the BB community came to my rescue and bought 24 sets of those from me. The fork trim rings that fit between the 2 black painted sections - nowhere to be found. Those cost me $700 to have 15 pairs CNC machined from Stainless and manually polished to match the original cast-pewter chrome ones. The originals pit and turn to something ugly when chroming is tried. Again, the BB community rescued me and bought the other 14 pairs.

Good luck on your project -

Thanks Gordon, I was hoping you'd chime in. I won't have a chance to go look at it for another week and a half, as it's a fair bit out of town. I'm also still waiting to hear if it runs....

If the bike is all there, but not running, not seized, what would be a reasonable price? I assume it goes up a fair bit if it's running...

At the end of the day, I'm not sure if I have the $$$ to do a proper resto on it...at least not right now....(I'm only 27, give me a break!)....however, I think it'd be a cool driver until I could...(or is it forbidden to actually ride black bombers??).

Thanks guys...I've learned a fair bit here already.

Candy blue was available in '68. These two links should help:

Paint colors: http://www.spookytoms.com/CB450-PaintColors.html

Serial numbers: http://www.spookytoms.com/CB450-IDPlates.html

Thanks for the links, much appreciated!

I'll have to figure out what year it actually is....it's got the K1 colored tank, but has the K0 side covers...

Is there a huge difference in value form the K0 to the K1?

Rats! Sold before I had a chance to go check it out...I was going to cancel my weekend plans to make the drive...oh well!

Anyways, for those of you that were wondering, the asking price was $1800....As per the seller, it ran and drove great, and included some NOS parts...

I've missed out on a few bikes lately that have sold before I've gotten over to see them....I'll have to make some more time to do it!

Thanks for your input anyways!

Well, $1,800 was a steal in my opinion. I would have expected 2-3 times that, seriously. It is absolutely ok to ride them - they are made for it. Today is the first time I've ever heard there was a 1968 K0. Production of the K1 started late 1967 and was the more preferred 5 speed and larger, taller stance with conventional forks and gauges. I have a 1,300 mile K1 CL450 that I'm bringing back to life. The mechanicals are fantastic, but the paint and chrome suffers from age.

As an investment for any serious restoration cost - the K0 is the only wise choice at this point. Of course age and rarity help, so the K1's would be 2nd. As for a lower cost rider, find any K1, K2 and later buy it and enjoy the better enginnered 5 speed. If you want to invest and keep it long term, find another BB and enjoy the comments and questions every time it's pulled into a parking lot. That bike gets a lot of questions and on-lookers wanting to know what it is...

You're right, those head pipes are unmistakeable.  What a terrible thing to do to a nice bike.

The Bb was a steal.............even though it looks like a repaint and stuffed seat.

Nice red CB77...........if you need a motor or parts, just ask. Sorry, no mufflers.
