’76 550 Project
« on: May 03, 2011, 11:42:31 AM »
I’m picking this bike up with extra engine for $100.00. All I know so far about the bike is it’s a ’76 CB550. I’m curious… I’ve not see the bike in person and this is the only picture I’ve seen, I’m wondering if anyone by sight can tell if this is a ‘K’ or ‘F’ model 550.

K model, F's had the trap door tank.

Confirmed. After some research, I confirmed that '76 CB550's with VIN# starting with 123XXXX are in fact "K" models. I wasn't sure if maybe the tank was taken from a different model. If I'm not mistaken, looking thru the color codes, it seems the only color offered in 76 were Candy Garnet Brown and the color of this tank appears to be blue. Not that I intend to do a true resto, it's just good to know what I'm working with. :D

Looks like a CB 500 tank but then again it may just have been repainted in that style. Wish I could find bikes around here for $100.

The frame/setup is def a K from the kickstand and start key placement as well.
The front fender is K.
Side panels: K
Seat? K.
Pipes? aftermarket. NOT a K.

Looks pretty stock, except those pipes.

100 bucks!  Man, I thought I got a good deal.  Just picked up an inspected and running '78 CB550.  You beat me on this one hands down.  Jealous.

Make no mistake, it will take a lot of work. But that's something I'm looking forward to doing with the kid. I have to round up a truck in the next couple weeks and drive to Spokane to pick it up.

Not making any mistake.  I just spent probably 30 hours of labor fine tuning the engine/ignition/carbs.  There's satisfaction in getting it going though with every positive step.  That is part of the hobby.  Hope you enjoy it.  Very gratifying when everything you do actually starts to work!
