brake light
« on: May 02, 2011, 04:42:24 AM »
I changed the tailight assembly on my 1977 550F and now the brake light does not work.  Neither the front or rear brake activate the light.  I can not swear the light was working when I swapped tailights but I know it was working 2 weeks ago at inspection.  The taillight works fine.  Suggestions welcome.  Could switching the brown and green wire inadvertantly have caused this?

Green is ground, brown is tailight and green/yellow is brake light.  Check continuity to ground with your multimeter from green to ground, put positive lead at green/yellow junction under the seat to check for 12v when lever is pulled or pedal depressed.  If voltage is there and ground is good you have either a bad bulb or socket, or wire not connected up under the t/l housing...Larry

I had a problem when I swapped mine, and it was just that I didn't have solid ground connection.

It could be something simple too. Check to see if both filaments are on. I had the adjuster for the foot brake too tight and it was keeping the brake light on all the time. It seemed like neither of the switches would turn it on because it was already on. It's kind of a face palm thing, but it's nice when things are that simple.
