Can I remove Honda plate from stator cover on CB550?
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:54:47 AM »
Hey All,

On my 1977 CB550F, Can I remove the Honda logo plate from the stator cover?   I've seen some CB550s with the plate off.

Below is a link to a stator cover on ebay and the "Honda" name isn't on it.

I didn't think it was removable.  Is it on some but not others?

Thanks!

Mine fell off and I lost it while riding.

I don't know off the top of my head if the posts are punched or if there is a clip or plate nut on the inside. I think there is just screws holding the stator windings in place, once they are removed you should have a plain view of what is needed to remove it

I guess I'll have to look at it closer.  Pulled the screws and the windings out and it still wasn't clear.   Hmmm...

Amazing, I was just going to reseach this exact issue...  I tried to gently pry it but figured there had to be a different way...

It prys off apparently:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=64560.0

yeah, mine came off..  I pryed it up on one side with a small flat tip screwdriver and held it up with a small hook screwdriver.  Then just kind of walked the flat tip screwdriver around the plate...

Grabbed a 20x magnifying glass.    Mine sure looks like a one-piece and can't be removed.

from the inside you can see there are 3 or 4 bumps with holes in them the emblem has pins that press into these holes, if you can't get under it from the outside with out doing damage take it off use a punch and Peck on the pins through the holes in the bumps from the inside

I don't know if there are barrel clips in there or some type of adheasive.

Mine popped right off, it was only held on with 3 tiny metal clips.  I gently pried it with a small screw driver.

No metal clips and I see no pins.   I checked my parts manual for my CB550F (1977) and it doesn't show a separate "Honda" cover piece either.

Wonder if they changed the design through the years?

According to the Fiche.. it is one piece and doesnt come off:

This is as opposed to the 1976 model, which does.

Could you put a 1976 stator cover on? I dont know.

All the 500/550 covers fit all the engines but the 77/78 had the logo cast in whilst the earlier ones had the loose emblem

WARNING

Do not start the engine, or even turn it over with the generator cover off as the cover is the only thing holding the oil gallery blanking plug in

Excellent info!!  We now know why some can and others can't remove the cover.    Was starting to doubt myself.

Are the stator covers on the CB550s interchangeable between years then?

If you mean the removable emblem its the same part 1971 through 1976

What I meant was, can you interchange the entire stator housing and related components between CB500 and CB550s  from  1971 - 1977?

Curious to know if I can take an earlier housing and place it on my 1977 model

If anybody has an extra stator cover Honda emblem (item #2) in the parts diagram listed above, I'd sure be interested in buying it from you.  Recently acquired a 1976 CB550K and the emblem is missing off the stator cover and I am looking for one.

Thanks

Randy

I have seen decent ones go too high on eBay. HondaParts-Direct.com (Texas Honda Dealership) show it new for $39.87 8) I think they said if a part shows a price, they can order it.

RandyB and Eworth, sounds like the simplest solution to each of your quests would be just to swap stator housings.  RandyB gets the one with the emblem cast in and Eworth gets the one without an emblem.  Only cost is postage.
