Joe Rocket Jackets??
« on: April 17, 2006, 06:46:49 AM »
Anyone have a Joe Rocket jacket.  Are they good, what are your opinions.  I have a few models that I've been looking at and just wondered if the quality is there.  There pretty hyped up.

i've tried some although never purchased one... but, i can say:  try it on, move around, put yourself in the position that you ride.  i've put on a lot of riding jackets and some rock and some suck!  it's just gotta be built for you.  too much bulk irritates me and makes me feel like a freak when people watch me walk by but, not enough makes me feel like i'm gonna die if i crash... you decide

honestly, i like my old leather AGV with reinforced elbows, shoulders and forearms.  it's an XL while i'm normally a L... but, I get cold easily and i like to be able to put 4tshirts and 2 sweatshirts on if i want to... the newer style jackets often dont allow for that as all their armor gets in the way and starts bunching everything up.

Yeah, the Vanson I had and loved, but just sold was cut for a very slim fit and basically a race type position all the time.  I'd love to get another one but all the Jackets have the same type fit.  I'm looking for something alittle looser, but not too loose and more comfortable.  I'll be trying a few types on over the weekend.

This past winter I picked up a Joe Rocket Meteor.  Textile with dual density body armor.  I like it alot.  They can get spendy, but going textile saved some cash over leather.  I actually got mine on eBay, and saved nearly 50% on the jacket.  (It was brand new).  In any event, try it on, then search for the best price.

yeah, I've been to newenough.com   great prices and all the jackets are new.  I probably won't buy it locally once I have the size I need because the net is always cheaper than dealer markup.

Chris, I have a JRocket "Atomic" jacket, about 4 yrs old, paid about $120. Zip out vest lining, armored elbows shoulders back. I took

out the backpiece - too warm. Lotsa vent zippers to increase airflow - chest arms back. I'm a fair weather rider so I can't talk about

wet or cold performance but it cuts the wind nicely. I leave the lining out for my April-October riding here in Michigan. It is

holding up very well although I haven't yet put it through the washer. I think there are pants to go with the jacket but I don't have

them. I got it here http://www.joerocket.com/affiliates/recleisure/index.cfm, they have A LOT of JR stuff.

I bought a Joe Rocket Pheonix 3.0 for warm weather riding.  Surprise surprise, with the rain liner zipped in and an extra layer or two, it's great in cold weather (40 degrees) as well!  The sleeves are curved to match your arms position when riding and it's very comfortable.  In the hot weather the mesh lets the air through while shading you from the sun.  On 90+ days, I stay comfortable while my T-shirt wearing buddies cook in the heat.  I gave $139 for mine and feel it was a good value.

I have the Joe Rocket Meteor 4 jacket. Its a great jacket for cold, cool and warmish days. Once it gets over about 70 degrees I start cooking. But I have a mesh type jacket for warmer riding so its not bad for me. It has armor at the shoulders, elbows and back and also a removeable inner insulated lining. I use mine every day to commute and its good to keep me warm when the temperatures about 25 degrees or so. Thats good enough for me!

I used to have a Meteor 3 jacket but it (and me) slid down the freeway at 80 mph and ended up in a ditch. It performed perfectly, I had afew minor bumps and bruises but nothing serious, no road rash, no joint problems since the crash. Due to this I'd highly recommend any Metoer jacket from Joe Rocket. Hope that helps.

Paul, thanks for the recommendation.  I wouldn't think a textile (non leather) jacker would old up under an 80mp spill.  Might have to pic one up for the really hot days as I usually where leather jackets most of the time.  80mph is a good test of jacket strength I'd say.

Nothing like crash testing, huh?  ??? It held up remarkably well. The joint protection was great. I was wearing jeans at the time, and while they worked suprisingly well in not disintergrating while I slid down the freeway, they offered no joint protection and as such my knee has never quite been the same - but it does tell me when its about to rain!

I think the modern textile jackets offer very similar abrasion resistance under 'road' conditions (maybe not track speeds) and have the added benefit of not requiring any 'maintenance', cleaning or whatever like leather, and its 100% waterproof to boot!

I have the AlterEgo jacket got it off of ebay from someone who specializes in the JR stuff. name is gypsie2112.

I like the AlterEgo it has the waterproof liner, and all the pads as well.  It also has the textile part zip off to turn into a mesh jacket.

With the liner in its quite warm.  Also has a small pack that hooks inside that you can put the outer layer in if you decide to change it while riding.

I admit I haven't riden with it as all mesh I usually just open the venting a bit and it works nicely.

I just bought a summer weight (mesh with armour) jacket and love it. I hardly got on a bike all summer because it was too hot to wear leathers etc.
Best of all it was an end of season special ($95 AUD).

Went trying on some jackets over the weekend.  Most of the Joe Rockets I tried on I didn't really like.  The dealer I went to mostly had the race replica jackets which are cut very tight.  So I went to newenough.com and ordered the Twist jacket - it will be here tomorrow.  Vintage look with all the modern toughness.  I'm going to see how I like it.  If not I'm going to spend the money and get another Vanson, tried on a bunch over the weekend too.  Very cool looking jacket and can fit elbow and shoulder armor/pads...

It was 35 when I went to work today. I wore my mossi jacket with the zip in liner and the cold never touched me.

I agree with the billboard thing for the most part.  At least some patches can come off.  Some of there jackets, they should pay YOU for advertising.  Hopefully the jacket fits good.  If the patches are sewn on they'll probably come off and replaced with some vintage patches I have and my new sohc4.com patch :)

I just bought the Icon Retro Daytona jacket in blue..  I hated the patches, so I spent an hour or two with my swiss army knife, and a bright lamp overhead, and went to work..   I just cut only the stitches from the top of each patch, and when done, the patch comes off with no damage at all to the jacket.. Then you can easily pull out the remaining string, without a trace.  It took me a LONG time, but well worth it, as I feel comfortable wearing the jacket now..  Too bad ICON won't sell the jacket this way- probably sell a lot more of them!!!  Got mine through newenough.com, by the way.  Very satisfied with their prices and service!

Yeah, I really like the ICON jackets too, but just WAY TOO MANY patches on them.  What do you expect though, there owned by Parts Unlimited and have to get the adverts in there somehow.

And, I don't know about you guys, but my wife really didn't like the "I love my Hooker (headers)" patch on the jacket..  I have to admit it looked pretty damn ridiculous, heart shaped and everything.  That one was the first patch I removed.  Why the ICON styling folks think that is cool, I don't know.  I really like the look of the jacket with no patches now, however!  :)
