couple cb650 questions
« on: May 02, 2005, 04:16:20 PM »
hello, as some of you know i recently got a 81 cb650 custom with 6000 miles. i changed the oil in it(super black) and tried to take off the air box to clean out the carbs with some carb cleaner. i think i am gonna change the oil again with some mobil 1 15w-50 and be done with it for a while. he is what i was wondering: i am going to be making the ride to ruidoso new mexico(i am in albuquerque about 180 miles away) for the golden aspen rally. ruidoso is my home town and i have always wanted to participate. anyway, what precautions should i take(bike wise) before the trip. I want to have a jet kit and k&n filters on the carbs by then but i think it would make the trip right now. I also wonder what i could do(cheap and easy) to increase throttle response/h.p. before the rally. thanks for the help

as i made this mistake ill pass this lil gem on to you

check the voltage at the battery while the engine is running.

should be better than 13. VDC at an idle
around      14. VDC at 2500 rpm
and above that   at 5000 rpm

if your not charging your battery as you ride your just sitting on a timer.
then when your battery drains dead your pushing her to the next exit.

if its working well,  have a great ride.
if its not charging i do know some resorses to look at.
let me know what you find.

You may have read some threads here that warn against synthetic oil due to the fact these bikes have a wet clutch.  The clutch can slip if you use the wrong oil.

Do a search or browse back a few days if you want more info on oil.

Spraying Carb Clean thru the intake really doesn't do anything.  Might clean a little grime off the choke butterflys but that's it.  Any gum you might have in there is going to be in the float bowls or jets.  If you really want to make sure that you don't have any gum in your carbs but don't want to remove them quite a few people here like to do an internal cleaning with Yamaha carb clean.  Apparently you can drain your gas from the bowls, then inject cleaner in thru the fuel line -- slosh around, let sit for 30 mins or something then drain.  Then flush them once with gas, and you're done.

This should work OK as long as the deposits of varnish are small and not totally blocking anything.  If it is, you have no choice but to remove and disassemble, or at least remove and poke the jets out.
