My new every day carry pocket knife (Spyderco Sage 2)
« on: May 05, 2011, 05:59:39 PM »
A little background...

For many years (when I was younger) I carried some of the inexpensive, off the shelf knives for my Every Day Carry (Buck, Gerber, etc.).  They were ok and worked just fine, but as I grew older I wanted something better.  Some time back, I ended up with a Benchmade AFCK.  At the time, it was the best, most expensive knife I had ever owned.  As good as it was, it never was "the" knife for me.  I eventually ended up with an EDI Genesis.  It was a really good knife, but a tad too large for my needs as an EDC.  Anyway, I took it to the coast and used it for a week long surf fishing trip and never rinsed it off with fresh water (yeah... stupid... I know).  Needless to say, it rusted pretty bad, pretty quick... lesson learned.  Unfortunately, the company that made it went out of business and the original EDI Genesis was hard to come by (for a replacement).

After going without an EDC knife for the last couple of years, I decided to do an ass load of of research before getting something else and get something I could be really happy carrying.  I'm 99.9% sure I've found it.  It's the Spyderco Sage 2.  With all of the online research I did on it, I couldn't find one bad review on it.

http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=421

I just got this knife today, but I have to say, it is as every bit as smooth as my EDI with it's bronze bushings.  The titanium handles feel solid in the hand.  The flat ground leaf blade is beautiful.  The frame lock (aka the Reeve Integral Lock) is one of the most solid locking mechanisms I've ever seen on a folder.  It also has a deep pocket clip that keeps the knife riding low and secure in the pocket.  And that wire clip may look weak, but trust me, it'll handle whatever you throw at it.

The only reservation I had in getting this knife is the fact that it's made in Taiwan.  That being said, this is one of the best constructed knives I've ever seen.  There's absolutely no play in the blade when open.  The blade is dead nuts centered in the handle when closed and when locked open, it's extremely tight.

It was $150 on Amazon ($140 after an Amazon coupon the wife had) for this thing (more than I thought I'd ever pay for a knife).  But, I have to say, from what little I've played with it, it appears like it's going to be worth every red cent.  I can already tell that this is definitely going to be my all time favorite EDC knife.  If you're in the market for a new EDC, I'd strongly recommend considering this knife before it disappears from the Syderco lineup.  I'm actually thinking about getting a second one.

Anyway, all of that being said, what do you have for your EDC knife?

Im a spyderco "delica" guy myself.  I carried alot of knives over the years and nothing feels as good in my hand and the quality of the steel is top notch.  I do have an" Endura" which is the same shape and proportions as a "delica"  but is a stainless steel case, the thing is huge however.  The trick, to me is finding the "delica" in a straight blade.  I dont like a serrated edge, I've cut myself pretty good with lots of things and know that a serrated adge in my hands is a dangerous item. DANGEROUS TO ME!

...that's my current favorite mainly because of the "Open Assist" or whatever they call it. I little bulky but not too bad.

If the pic doesn't work it's the Medium Smith & Wesson SWATMB Open Assist black knife.

I have been carrying a pocket knife since I was 10. Kids would get expelled for that now. I would be lost without one. Had a Buck that I liked but the steel was too hard to sharpen. Had a lovely and expensive Puma with a 4 inch blade that I carried through my twenties. It had a rosewood handle and solid brass frame. It sold me on locking blades. Still have it and still love it. About 20 years ago I decided I wanted something smaller. I bought my first Schrade, very nice and very expensive. It had about a 2 1/2 inch blade, stainless frame and a pretty colombo wood handle. I really liked it but it was a bit thick and heavy. I noticed that was the first place my jeans wore out.

Then one day about 8 years ago, my life was changed forever. My buddy Ted, rest his soul, showed me a Schrade he had just purchased, the SP2. They are twenty bucks, so cheap it's laughable. They are super quality, locking stainless blade with some sort of incredible plastic handle. It weighs almost nothing and is very slim. It's perfect. It's so cheap that if I'm on the side of the road and I need a screw driver or pry bar I don't hesitate to use it. If I break it, no big, I get another, no love lost. Had 3 or 4 of them. I'll never pay big bucks for an EDC again.

I had a CRKT Crawford Point Guard folder that served me well for several years. It was just under $50 when I got it. Nothing special but it just worked all the time every time. I say had because the TSA stole it from my checked luggage on my last flight. Hope the thief slices off he damn finger with it.

This time around I chose to get an assisted opening as its replacement simply because I thought it would be useful and I had not had one previously. I ended up with a Kershaw 1830X OSO Sweet assisted opening knife that so far I am quite happy with. The clip is a bit smaller than I like but I am loving the assisted opening. Used it countless times while 30 feet in the air hanging off a scissor lift hanging lights.

My next knife purchase will be a new camp knife. Looking at a few sizes of Opinel knives. http://www.opiknife.com/

That sucks.  Can you carry something like a Leatherman at least (with a blade as one of it's attachments)?  How about a Swiss Army knife?  You never know when that corkscrew and toothpick might come in handy. :)

I have a Delica also. All of the Spiderco folders I have seen are very nice! Mine keeps a great edge for a very long time.

Seriously a pocket knife is a tool. A two to three inch bladed knife is can be used for hundreds of tasks in a day and would be of useful to anyone even if sitting at a desk in front of a computer. To outlaw a simple tool is just plain asinine. I think some people seem to forget one of the things that separated us from the apes was banging a couple stones together to get an edge on a flint knife.

It is 8:30 A.M. here and I have used my knife maybe 4 times already. I have cut open a new bag of dog food to get them feed before I left for work. I sliced up the  apple I had for breakfast at my desk, I opened the mail at the desk, and I went out on the shop floor to open up some delivery boxes we got in since I left last night. I have had a knife in my pocket every single day for about the last 25 years and have no intention of ever being without one laws or no laws.

Here's a review of the Spyderco Sage 2... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/722495-Spyderco-Sage-2-Review Looks like you've picked a nice one according to them nomad.

I recently bought one of these, partially on impulse, partially because I had just lost my EDC, partially because I got a great deal on it.

Although It's a decent enough knife and very sharp right out the box I'm not impressed at all with it's overall quality.

I was very happy with it's predecessor which has a better build quality. I should have just bought another.  ::)

Could be time to check out the Spyderco...

That's pretty sweet.

My daily is a Kershaw Leek, in rainbow finish.

Holds a great edge, easy to open and close with one hand.  Spring assisted open.
It has a little thumbpiece screwed into the blade, so you could open it with that, but I prefer the raised hump on the back of the blade the you can press with the side of a finger and the blade absolutely flies open!
Have had others, but this one is a favorite.

+100

I had a semi-serated Delica for a long time and lost it, a very sad day for me.  It was $34 at Campmor when I bought it, if that's any indication of how long ago.  That thing survived being run over by a car and kept an incredible edge the whole time I had it.  I have not found a suitable alternative to that excellent knife.

Benchmade for me all the way. Stryker model with tonto tip and serrated section.
saved my life from multiple assaults and good everyday knife.

In my view every human worth the salt and water they use needs to have a edged tool on them. You don't, you die.

My "every day" has been a Victorinox Swiss Army "Waiter". My grandfather gave it to me as a reward for receiving my Wolf Cub badge and Knife Certificate. Have carried it almost daily since I was 8 years old. That's 30 years of reliability!!

For work (and camping) I carry a Grohmann DH Russell #3 Stainless "Jumper" Knife on my belt.  Canadian made in Pictou, Nova Scotia, rosewood handle, lifetime warranty, and the most solid piece of kit I have ever carried. If you've never seen one, check them out!!

Always have a knife too and feel naked without one. I keep one of these utilikeys on my key ring
Gerber paraframe is my current edc. I think I got it at a work Christmas party playing dirty Santa. It's a decent knife. My only complaint is the clip wiggles a little. I need to put some loctite on it.
I also like these Gerber Edges. Cheap enough to lose and it takes utility blades so you always have a sharp edge. I just can't seem to find the time to sharpen a knife any more!  :-[
