New member here, I'm going to need a LOT of advice!
« on: May 04, 2011, 12:01:51 PM »
Last night I bought an unknown year ( I think mid 70's) Honda CB550 rigid bobber project.  It's going to need a lot of work, and this will be the first time I've tried to build a bike, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out with it.  The guy I bought it from said you guys were really helpful.  It needs exhaust, carbs, wiring, a seat, etc. so if any of you have those parts available for sale, please let me know.

Let me be the first to say....BALLSY MOVE! Congrats on the purchase man, this forum is an awesome resource and the guys on here will not hesitate to help.

Motor looks like it's tilted strangely to the back, is that an optical illusion or is that frame for sure for a 550?

I'm pretty sure it's a 550 frame but not 100%. It could be the angle or the fact that the tank is just resting on the backbone.  I'm a mechanic for a living, so it's not a HUGE challenge, but I definitely have my work cut out for me. I'm just a little lost on where to start looking for parts, and what I can expect to pay for them.

Well this isn't all incluse, but the Good Sellers section is a great start when you're looking for parts.

First off, welcome!

550 parts are readily available, I have found everything I've always looked for. Not always new, but in good usable condition.

Check the for sale section of this forum. And post in the parts wanted section too.

Lastly, search cb550 on eBay, here are over 7,000 parts to get you started!! Good luck.

Sorry! He lied.
You're on your own.  ;D

Well maybe I shouldn't speak for everyone here.
You'll probably find one or two nice fellas that have a bit of advice.

Welcom to the fray. Bike looks keul already.

Cool, thanks for the link!  I actually picked up a pretty well restored '75 550 with a blown motor, and have swapped a lot of the parts over.  The nice thing about having a duplicate (somewhat) bike is that I can see how everything works and where it's supposed to go.

Oh, one more question- can anyone shed some light on how (if) I can static time this thing?

edit: actually, I have another question too.  My donor bike is a 550 SuperSport. Does that make it more valuable?

No, I would not say the 550F is more valuable, but the 4 into 1 exhaust is sought after. That model was only made 3-4 years (I have one).

Many may argue with me, but IMO the Super Sport has the best tank and side covers of the lot.
The shape and proportions just work perfectly together, but maybe I just feel that way cause I have two.  ;D
