bike won't idle...
« on: April 17, 2006, 05:09:05 PM »
hey guys,

i got into an accident about 2 1/2 months ago on my 1976 cb550f.  the bike didn't appear to sustain too much damage, just the brake/clutch levers and a dent in the tank where the bars came back an hit it (clubman bars).  it sat on it's side running (clutch side) for a few minutes until my roommate picked it up.  i didn't touch the bike for about a month because my fingers were broken and i woudn't be able to ride but when i finally started it, it started right up, ran for about a minute (maybe less) then died.

I decided to rebuild the carbs, which i did two days ago, and then i put them back on (i was only able to bench sync the carbs) and gave it a go.  after about 2 minutes of kicking, it finally started (choke all the way on).  the engine started racing, i pulled back the choke a bit and then it slowed down, then died.  i've gone through this about a dozen times, trying to alter how much i pull back the choke, where the idle screw is, giving it gas, etc.  always the same thing.

when it's dying, there is a knocking sound that i'm not sure what it is.  i pulled the plugs and they are very black and powdery.

some things about the bike :

it has a Suzuki GSXR pipe on it
110 mains
no air filter (the PO pulled them off and i haven't gotten new pods yet, although it ran great before the accident without them)
dyna ds1-2 ignition

right before the accident i had rebuilt the carbs and put the dyna ignition on and it was running great.

thanks in advance

jason

ok, update.

got it to run and idle with the choke half way out.  if i try to close the choke it starts to die and if i give it gas it sounds like i'm suffocating it.

is it possible the timing got off during the crash?
could i just be running really rich, even though nothing has really changed?

It sounds like something went wrong during your rebuild, like mis-assembly.
If the slides are in backward, or the clips that hold the needles down in the slides are not all the way down, these sort of things can happen. Also, the idle air screws should be about 1 turn out from the bottom. Check those, then report back?
