British/Irish Radio Communication
« on: March 31, 2006, 11:58:49 AM »
This is the transcript of the ACTUAL radio conversation of a British
Naval ship and the Irish, off the coast of Kerry, Oct 95. Radio
conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95:

IRISH:  Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South, to avoid  a collision.

BRITISH: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the  North, to avoid a collision.

IRISH: Negative. You will have to divert your  course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

BRITISH: This is the  Captain of a British navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

IRISH:  Negative. I say again, YOU will have to divert your course.

BRITISH: THIS  IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER HMS BRITANNIA. THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP
IN THE  BRITISH ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS,
THREE  CRUISERS, AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR
COURSE  15 DEGREES NORTH, I SAY AGAIN, THAT IS 15 DEGREES NORTH, OR
COUNTER-MEASURES  WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

IRISH: We are a  lighthouse. Your call.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Bob.

HMS Britannia (at least the most recent one) was the Queen's Royal Yacht

If you are going to insult all the Englishmen on this board, at least get your facts right...

Having said that - even less chance of the Irish lighthouse moving over...  8)

I don't routinely see other folks avatars on postings, but you made me curious, so I went for a look. I see your point.   ;)

Like the two Irish pilots landing a plane.

One says "gee this is a short runway".

The other replies "but #$%* it's wide"

In that instance a british pilot would demand that the runway turn itself the right way!

Wow, tough audience here, have to remember that. It was only meant for its humorous value. Technology capable of distinguishing between a lighthouse and a ship has been around almost as long as me.  ;D

I meant no criticism of you.  I've seen the story before several times in different variations.  Whenever these BS stories start off by saying they are 'true' or 'they actually happened', it is like waving a red flag in front of a bull for me.  A lot of stuff going around the net is just stuff somebody pulled out of their anal orifice (and is politically motivated) and is kept alive and believed by people. That story about the ship and the lighthouse is really only funny if it were true, and is cast in such a way to make somebody look foolish.  There is enough true foolishness out there without having to make it up.

You have a point. I use Snopes myself from time to time. Last time was someone I knew trying to convince me there was a particular phrase on the roof of the Washington Monument that of course no body could read from the ground. Being a bit suspicious, Snopes proved it to be another urban legend.
