Starter Moter Stuck Engaged with Ignition Off, 1976 CB750f

Funny thing happened yesterday.  I started my 750f yesterday and the starter motor was stuck engaged.  I turned the ignition off and it kept turning over.  I eventually had to disconnect the battery to turn turn off the starter.  I separated some wires near the battery and eventually it went back to normal operation.  What happened?  Could it be the ignition or some wires near the battery?

Starter Solenoid contact fused.

Take apart, dress contacts and you are probably good for another 10-15 years.

Sorry for ridiculous question, but where is the solenoid?  Near the battery or starter motor?

Follow the positive battery cable from the battery to the first component it connects to....that can-like component with the two big studs on top is the solenoid.

Under the left side cover.  There will be two large posts for big cables.  (Do disconnect the battery terminals before the attack with tools.)

If you aren't confident with your mechanical prowess, it is probably best to just buy a replacement solenoid, and put that in.

Thanks for the information gentlemen.  I am always reluctant to do any work there as the wiring looks like its about to disintegrate.  I was able to clean the posts, some rust.  If it happens again I will just replace the solenoid.

Sounds like you may have some failed insulation on those wires that "shorted" together, turning the starter motor? (If the solenoid contacts had fused together, separating the wires wouldn't have helped.)
