CR750 Oil Tank Work in Progress... Pics!
« on: April 28, 2011, 05:00:34 PM »
Thought I'd post some pics of my CR750 oil tank... there's still quite a bit of work to do.

The long tube inside the tank is going to be the crankcase vent

I machines the feed bung to accept the honda oil line fitting

I'm planning to vent the crank case into the tank via the tube on the bottom, like the stock CB750 tank.  The upper vent tube aiming towards the motor will receive the valve cover breather... on my bike, the valve cover breather went straight to atmosphere.  For the vent tube aiming to the rear of the bike I plan to just vent to atmosphere.  Does anyone see any problems with this set up?  All comments will be appreciated!

I still have to add a drain bung, the left side panel, the chain clearance cutout, the return line cutout and fitting, and finally the lower mounts.  That should take several nights of hard work.

Looking real good! Congrats you do a fine job. As a little point of thought, just run the cover breather in the atmosphere or in a seperate 'bottle'.  The air from the cover is hot and humid and will contaminate your oil.

Keep up the good work,

Cheers Rob
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

Thanks Rob!

I think I will just vent the the valve cover to atmosphere then, like you recommended.

I welded on two threaded posts to the frame to hang the tank from... and discovered that I now have to remove the rear wheel to get the tank in and out.  doh!

very good looking.
are you going to put a baffle on the atmosphere vent so that its harder for oil to splash out?

That's a good idea.  I added one in just before I welded the last side panel on.

I'll post more pics as I progress.

It's all done.

Baffle I added to prevent spashing out vent

Uppper mount... uses original oil tank rubbers and shoulder bolts

In frame

Lower mounts use original battery box rubbers

I pressure tested it to 5psi using soapy water.  Now I just need to get the oil lines made up.

I didn't have a sensitive enough scale to weigh the tank, but it's about 2lbs with the cap on.  I'll have to weigh it on a kitchen scale or something... will get back with that number later.

The total volume of the tank in 4.5litres... going to fill it 2/3 full so there's room for breathing.
