KO sold.... starting to miss her
« on: May 08, 2011, 09:31:42 PM »
clever name soon to be announced

i picked up a KO by some miracle and she runs
however the valve cover is leaking in one spot and the head gasket is seeping a little( the guy [a  bike mechanic] said that honda had a service bulliten thar said put a peice of rope in there and it might seal itself back up( from the heat or something) oh and

I NEED A UNICORN TRIPLE TREE! and members that could help it would be appriciated!

unfortunatley this bike has pods and i have to baby the throttle when opening her up or she bogs down but  if i do it just right she flies.... the thing that keeps me from some changes right now is that she idles great when shes warm
but ill post a vid soon to see what you think of the exaust and if you think i should paint the tank but here she is (i will be posting more pics real soon)

i now have about 3 or 4 different types of sissy bars...... and the bike came with an extra tank (in poor shape and no petcock) what year did they go to left side petcocks?
can the valve cover come off with out pulling the engine or is it like all the rest of them?
i have an oil leak at the valve cover i still need to get a vid of her running she sounds pretty good (i think) the baffle popped out on a ride yesterday and all it is two pipeshalf laid over each other kind of half over lapping.. gto it fixed boy was she loud with out it!

my other concern but not pressing issue is the pods the guy i bought it off of said the jets are stock and the whole way up but this throttle is so touchy i dunno if it can run better or if its a a KO thing... it bogs if i hit the throttle too hard i seems like escpecially if 4th or 5th if i want her to pull ahead a little more i have to slow my way on it if i just go WOT it bog to where it almost dies....iseems to act to rich sometimes(like at a cold start, it starts with just a flick of the choke) but it pops a little on deacceleration( which is lean right?)  im gonna do some things to it this fall thats when ill decide about the pods i might be able to get my hands on the stock airbox and will probably go that route later in the year... she runns great but like i said its a dance between the throttle and the engine and i have to pay close attn to what shes doing

No way to get the valve cover off in the frame. The pods are causing your acceleration issue. the easiest way to fix it is to get an airbox.

Petcocks jumped to the left at K3 or 4 (1973/4).

Agreed the pods are your running problem, along with the pipes (little to no baffling I guess?). A K0 airbox may be hard to come by. popping on decel is usually lean, but mid to idle circuit lean, not main jet lean. Raise the needle a notch by lowering the clip. Adjust air bleed screw (I think that's what you have) by turning in a skosh. That'll fatten up the low end.

After all that, the mains may be lean as well because of the pods and pipes. Even with a stock airbox, you may still run poorly with those pipes. So richening all three, idle, needles (mid) and the mains (top) may fix your running problems. CB750s aren't as sensitive to pods as smaller engines are. I think you can tune it to run properly. I run/ran pods (granted different carbs, Mikuni VM29s) and it ran flawlessly.

"raised the jets all the way"? That doesn't even make sense. He could raise the needles, all the way, but that would be too much. And the needles are for mid range. If you put the largest main jets in it that also would be WAY too much.

Removing the air box for a crack also doesn't make sense. Cracks can be fixed.

Good luck, it can be a fine piece either way.

I hate to say it but if you dont have a lot in that thing then I would probably flip it. resto parts are going to add up quickly. BUT if you always lusted for a K0 then you have a good start.

Hi TJ, that idle is too high and the way the throttle hangs as it comes back to idle is a direct result of pods, that bike will run far better when set up right...Oh, and those pipes are 4 into 2, 4 header pipes, 2 tail pipes.....Good score....Go get yourself a stock airbox mate, thats half the battle right there.... ;)

i dont know why i said 4 into 1's i think force of habit from the 550's ive owned and the K8 i have (with a 4 into 1)... ive just realized i have the first and the last of the K's

ive talked to the PO about stock parts and he thinks he has all of em at his cousins house so as soon as he gets a hold of them i think the triple tree and front fender(its bent up) are first on the buy list

Paint or not?  IMHO, anybody can buy a paint job but nobody can recreate what time has done to your bike.  It is beautiful in it's own rite.  "Rustoration" rather than restoration.  Most anything else looks fake unless done extremely right and that costs much money and time.

I'm stuggling with that.... the side covers are pristine and the tank is so faded... I'm def gonna take my time and eventually get it stripped down and do the frame.... I'm not a rustorator... before long its a rat bike... some parts need preserved the tank would only be the only unrestored part of the bike... I might have another tank that I could paint stock and keep this one as is

Some guy the bar said I should stop buy here :D

Cool bike, just clean it up, get it working right  and ride the heck out of it. I got a 550f a few years ago with 8500 miles on it.  It  could have been made mint pretty easy but then I would have to spent more time messen with it than riding it. I have no desire to own a  museum  piece, nothing is ever perfect, ever.

Just an opinion, enjoy the bike

Thats a good buy on those pipes. rusted pipes go for more than that on ebay and a "new" set is 1200 +. my point was that a full restoration was going to cost quite a bit. If you are looking to put it back together slowly with parts you find here or there that are less than perfect I am sure it can be done 50 bucks at a time.
