Leaking overflow tube
« on: May 01, 2011, 01:59:27 PM »
So, my #2 carb has been leaking badly out the overflow. I thought the float valve was sticking, so I pulled the carb's back off (#^#%, they were a major pain to re-install last week). I confirmed that the float height was correct, then that the valve was working. After much trial and error, I finally just filled the float bowl with gas to just under the end of the tube, and sure enough, a steady stream of gas comes out. There is no obvious crack, but that doesn't mean there isn't one somewhere.

I checked the classifieds and didn't see anything. Anybody got a spare float bowl for a #1-2 carb for a 77-78? I really would rather avoid paying $300 for a full set of carbs when I just need a float bowl.

Sorry, 550K.

And the crack actually is visible, about an inch long starting from just above the base of the float bowl.

I'd try to repair it if I were you.  I repaired my petcock reserve tube with solder. It was cracked in 4 places.  Works like a charm now.  Some members have used JB Weld to fix their overflow tubes.

Yes, I saw that. I think I am going to try the JB Weld approach. I am not a good solderer

Hobby stores (if you can find one) sells brass tubing. If you can get one that is a tight fit over the existing one, you can avoid using too much JB Weld or solder. If it is a tight fit you may not need anything at all.

Went with the JB Weld option. Reinstalled the float bowl over the weekend, buttoned her up, solved some other niggling issues and on the road she went for the first time since 1981 or so.

No leaks after about 3 hours and 200 miles of riding.
