Carb intake boot: rubber separated from metal
« on: May 14, 2011, 12:29:45 PM »
Hi,

I tried a bunch of searches, but I haven't seen this problem before. I popped a carb into the motor to take a measurement. When I pulled it off, the rubber came with it. The rubber is still fairly soft.

Anyone had this before? Is there a fix, or just replacement? I wonder why they separated. I wonder how they were originally bonded.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave

You might be successful bonding it back together with a two-part urethane adhesive, but replacement would give peace of mind that there wont be any air leaks.

I wondered what was under there. Thanks for the look!
Anyway I would tend to replace it, but it could be glued on like Jimmy says. I would worry that the other identical one might be from the same - possibly bad - batch. Are these new or the originals? I have at least one set of old originals if you need one... rubber is hard compared to new, but they are not threatening to come apart.

Oh man, that sucks.  I'm surprised to see what the metal underneath looks like, and even more surprised that I now realize that people on eBay are selling the metal pieces without the rubber!

I wasted a lot of time with leaking manifold boots on a 350 twin once, and really recommend getting a replacement set unless you can get those bonded back on perfectly.  The frustration of air leaks is not worth it if you dont' have a good remedy.  However, speaking of good bonding remedies, would JB Weld work?

Agreed. The thought of having an air leak messing with getting my freshly rebuilt bike jetted properly is a nightmare.

I'm not in a big hurry since the bike is mid-build. However, over in my thread the guys pointed out that David Silver Spares has reproduction units (which at least one member reports are good quality). They are $52 for a set, compared to $33 each for Honda parts. So, I ordered a set from DSS.

Thanks for the tips and ideas.
